Digimon Adventure tri. is a 6-part anime film series, produced to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the first Digimon Adventure series and is a direct sequel to the television series. On 5 May 2018, the 6th and final film titled Bokura no Mirai (Future) will finally open in Japanese cinemas. There was an advanced screening for the press earlier this month, prior to the official release. What is going to happen in this big hit film series and how will it end at last? Let me introduce you to the final film.
What are the mysterious black feathers all about?
Digimon Adventures tri. takes place six years after the events of the TV series. The protagonist, Taichi Yagami (Tai Kamiya in the English localization), is now a high school student. The grown-up DigiDestined explore and start their adventures again.
Many fans must be guessing how the story develops with the film’s visual having already been revealed. The visual shows Meiko Mochizuki falling with Meicoomon in her arms, and we see the rest of the DigiDestined with each of their partners trying to reach out their hands to her. This visual raised some key questions. What will happen to their future? What do the black feathers represent? The visual perfectly fits the very image of the final chapter of this film series with all the DigiDestined and their partner Digimon illustrated together.
What to do to save the world
The mega digimon which appeared in the 5th film, Kyousei (Co-existence), was called Ordinemon. The rampaging Meicoomon changed into Raguelmon and merged with Ophanimon: Falldown Mode who is the alternate dark form of Hikari’s partner, Tailmon (Gatomon in English), thus becoming Ordinemon. The world has already started to collapse and the Digital World is about to swallow the Real World. Amid the despair, leader Taichi is absent. Yamato (Matt in English localization) must take over the position of the missing Taichi or nobody else can. The DigiDestined members stand up and face the danger to save the world, believing that Taichi will be back. Yamato has made up his mind to save the world in their own way with Taichi’s trademark goggles in his hand. Homeostasis decides that Ordinemon is already irreparable and executes his final plan involving the Real World.
In an attempt to prevent the oncoming destruction, the DigiDestined members and their partners continue to fight. As Hikari (Kari in English localization) feels guilty and blames herself, Tailmon’s voice reaches her. ‘All the light lies within Meicoomon…’ The time has come for the DigiDestined to make their final decision. What is the future that the DigiDestined finally choose?
Character Development of the DigiDestined
You all grew up, the DigiDestined children.
What you can see through all 6 films is a coming-of-age story of the DigiDestined members. Since many have grown up watching the series, Digimon has become geared towards that audience. I was quite certain that the final film would be compelling enough just for the ending, but it had so much more. It was full touching scenes and dialogue.
You cannot carry on being the DigiDestined children.
I find it very encouraging that the grown-up members act of their own will. Their dialogue tells you of their growth in many ways. As they say, ‘Life is a series of choices’, and Taichi, Yamato, and Hikari all make up their minds and decide to choose their own course from their own respective positions. The 6th film makes you realize that the DigiDestined children are not children any more. Meanwhile, it also gives you an opportunity to recall your own experiences of the past. At the press screening, I heard many saying ‘It’s the most touching Digimon ever.’ I can assure you that this film is a thrilling chapter and a deserving finale for the series.
