MANGA.TOKYO visited U-TREASURE, a unique brand specializing in anime, manga, and gaming-inspired jewelry and accessories. There we made our own Neon Genesis Evangelion ring!
Geek apparel has always been about stamp T-shirts and our western version of ita-backpacks, full of stickers and drawn logos (learn more about Japanese ita-bags here). Throw in the occasional hidden pair of socks or underwear and that’s about it. Not much of a fashion statement, is it? However, geek popular culture has experienced a unprecedented boom in the last decade or so. Stories that were once considered childish, such as comic book heroes, are now having people hyped. The world is thirsty for these ‘childish’ stories, and one of the biggest industries that provides them is the Japanese otaku industry.
In Japan, where anime and manga imagery is integrated in everyday life, fans are looking for more ways to express their love for their favorite series. Does gaming and anime accessories have to look like toys? Is it difficult to combine style and fandom? U-TREASURE doesn’t think so. The brand started off in October 2015 with three stores offering customers the chance to make their own geeky wedding rings. Currently, they have expanded to 14 stores all over Japan and they now offer not only wedding and engagement rings but also bracelets and many more accessories. Their collection covers a wide spectrum of geek titles, and they are committed to licensing as many as possible. They have items inspired by Star Wars, Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon, and One Piece!
MANGA.TOKYO visited their store for the unique experience of making our own Evangelion-inspired ring using a NERV-branded laser-engraving machine. Of course, we took our camera with us to let you enjoy the experience as well. Check out our video and the photo gallery!
