Winter 2019 anime WATATEN!: An Anime Flew Down to Me (Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita!) has just started airing on Japanese TV, but on 30 December I got the chance to see the first episode at a preview screening at the anime-only movie theater in Shinjuku Picadilly. I got to enjoy more than just the episode, as main cast members Reina Ueda (Miyako Hoshino), Maria Sashide (Hana Shirosaki), Rika Nagae (Hinata Hoshino), and Akari Kito (Noa Himesaka) came on stage to talk about the series.
After the first episode of the anime was screened, the cast members came onto the stage and talked passionately about what they loved about the anime as well as what it was like recording for it. Ueda was wearing an outfit reminiscent of Miyako’s tracksuit, and the other three cast members were wearing the outfits of their idol group ‘Wataten☆5’, which was formed to perform the anime’s opening theme. When they came on the stage, the audience could be heard shouting ‘cute!’.
The story begins with shy otaku university student Miyako instantly taking to the cute elementary schooler Hana Shirosaki, who is brought home by Miyako’s little sister Hinata. The cast talked about how the story’s main point of interest was how cute the characters are. One especially cute aspect of Hana is the gap between her normally cool and aloof attitude and the cute faces she pulls when she is able to eat the desserts that she loves. Another talking point is the cute squidgy cheeks of the girls, which you should definitely watch out for.
Miyako is especially good at making cosplay outfits for the elementary school girls that make her squee from all the cuteness! This means that you can look forward to some very cute outfits in the series. The sweets that Miyako makes are also all really cute. The cute sweets and Hana’s adorable cheeks make this anime almost too sweet to watch.
The full music video for the opening theme ‘Kimama na Tenshi-tachi’ was also shown for the first time at this event. This was a treat for the fans as currently only the short version is available on the website. The full version of the video will be included on the DVD included in the first press edition of the OP/ED single which goes on sale on 31 January 2019. The DVD will also include the Music Clip of the video as well as a making-of, so we are sure the fans can’t wait to get their hands on it. The regular version of the CD has the cute 2D versions of Wataten☆5 with their cheeks squished against each other.
From the cast talk, we learned that the cast were often given delicious sweets at the recording studio, and the cast get along so well that they would go to karaoke or the movie theater together. The atmosphere at the venue was so warm that we could almost forget that it is almost the middle of winter. It seems that cast members really want viewers to enjoy eating sweets while they watch the anime so that they can enjoy them along with the characters. If this winter you are looking for an anime so sweet it might ruin your teeth, then maybe you should give this one a try.
