‘Touken Ranbu -Hanamaru-‘ Collaboration Food
When you talk about collaboration food, it’s often character-based food, such as Kashuu Kiyomitsu’s XX or Yamatonokami Yasusada’s favorite XX. However, Hanamaru Festival is not an ordinary collaboration.
According to the creators, they came up with the collaboration menu ‘based on an unforgettable scene in each episode.’ Apparently, they watched all the episodes of Touken Ranbu -Hanamaru- and completed the collaboration menu through trial and error.
Food Packed with Love
Just by looking at the food, I can tell that each item in this collaboration is very well thought out. There is no way that they could have created such food if they hadn’t seen the anime!! I can guarantee that…
Ok, let’s hear Kashuu Kiyomitsu introduce the food!
・Episode 1 January sweet – Snowball fights in the Citadel
This sweet is inspired by the scene from Episode 1 where everyone was having snowball fights. These colorful mochi (sticky rice balls) are actually ‘konnyaku mochi’, made from devil’s tongue. It is low in calories! The texture is so different and you’d feel like you want to eat more than you can handle. The Konpeito sugar candy on top gives it a good crunchiness.
・Episode 2 February sweet – Burning Honnoji Temple curry
The last moments of Nobunaga Oda are unknown as Honnoji Temple burned down…but here is the curry that was recreated as a burning Honnoji Temple. Even on the way, we were genuinely looking forward to this as the name is too extraordinary!! As it is ‘burning’, it is quite spicy! The actual curry is much redder than this. You can have some salad or kara-age fried chicken in between.
・Episode 4 April sweet – Bringing Makunouchi Bento to Flower-Viewing
The color of the bento box matches with Kashuu Kiyomitsu. What do we have here…
What a gorgeous Makunouchi Bento! People used to eat this kind of bento (lunchbox) during the intervals (makuai) of traditional drama performances, and that’s where its name came from. Makunouchi Bento is nutritious and filling as well as invitingly colorful! Most of the time, bento is eaten when it is not warm. However, this Makunouchi Bento comes with the warm and crispy food that is just being cooked and/or freshly deep-fried. It brings out the best of each item.
‘To be honest, I would like everyone to eat this bento sitting under a tree,’ say the staff there. I totally agree!
・Episode 11 November & Episode 12 December sweet – Welcome back! Hanamaru crepe
This is inspired by both the last phase of the anime and Yamatonokami Yasusada’s hair ornament. This crepe has a sakura pattern and a delicious chewy texture! It goes perfectly with bitter matcha ice cream after a meal. Because it was so beautiful, I actually hesitated to eat it for a second…
Other than the above, there are many more items on the special menu. It includes ‘Nabeyaki-style udon for Master’ from ‘the udon musical’ that everyone loves, and ‘green tea and Mikazuki zenzai red bean soup’. It was very refreshing to find out that the food has captured the anime essence, and is not just based on Touken Danshi. I must mention that each one of them was beautiful to look at! I can even recommend the food to those who would like to have traditional Japanese food.
In the next page, we’ll see some collaboration goods that you only find in Kyoto.
