Hello! This is Ayumi, your favorite Manga.Tokyo otaku!
It’s been five years since TIGER & BUNNY aired back in 2011. The anime had a 25-episode run and spawned 2 feature-length animated movies. It’s still very popular; so popular that there is a live-action Hollywood adaptation on the works! Most of us fans were expecting a sequel, but we’ll work with what we are given.
Since I am one of those fans, today I want to talk to you about the charm of this unique anime. Let’s do a quick review before the release of the Hollywood movie!
What Kind of Anime is TIGER & BUNNY?
The anime is set in the near future, in a city called Sternbild. Here, there are people with superpowers who are referred to as NEXT. These NEXT can get a sponsorship in order to fight crime and become superheroes. One of the superheroes is the ‘Crusher for Justice’ protagonist, Kotetsu T Kaburagi, and he’s in a bit of a bind. After being dropped by his sponsors, Kotetsu is prepared for his inevitable retirement from superhero activities. However, he is picked up by a new company, Apollon Media. In order to gain sponsorship, however, he must team up with a new superhero names Barnaby Brooks Jr. But Kotetsu believes that heroes should work alone and refuses Barnaby during their first mission together.
It’s a refreshing hero anime about two opposing heroes who somehow run around and manage to fight crime. The anime has a very detailed representation of different psychological aspects, awesome hero suits that would please any mecha fan, and really beautiful girls. The female heroes are really cute. It gained a lot of attention for being the first anime to put real sponsors on the hero suits. On the chests of the hero suits were the names of real companies such as SoftBank and Bandai. It had quite a lot of impact, especially in the otaku world where the names that MacDonalds are presented with in each anime became a known meme.
The anime also paid homage to American comics such as Iron Man and Spiderman, and was praised by both men and women.
By the way, the character designs were created by Masakazu Katsura, who has written many masterpieces such as Video Girl Ai and I’s.
Let’s celebrate! The Hollywood movie is coming!
As soon as the news that the T&B was to be made into a Hollywood movie was announced, the fans went crazy. There were some awfully emotional comments such as ‘I’m so moved the tears won’t stop!’ and ‘I need to start saving for the Hollywood premiere!’
Ron Howard, known for The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons will be involved in the production. The script is being written by Ellen Shanman.
The expectations are rising as it will be like the real T&B! The subject matter definitely suits America more than Japan, right?!
There are many goods available!
These figures faithfully recapture the characters’ hero suits. They are high-quality action figures produced by Bandai. What makes these figures special are the detailed, moving parts!
S.H. Figuarts have made figures for so many different titles: Dragonball, JoJo and even Sailor Moon. The joints in the legs and arms move, so you can put them in any pose you want!
You could play around with them like I did at a themed cafe:
(Here I showed Barnaby expressing his disgust for pickles.)
Buddies getting along
Kotetsu gets a hot dog for Barnaby- ‘But I can’t eat pickles…’
Kotetsu’s special fried rice! I can hear the words ‘Looks good!’
A hero anime the teams up with the popular character Rascal?!
These days where popular anime are more like Attack on Titan, the title decides to do a collaboration with the character Rascal the Racoon, which seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the series.
Well, at first glance it doesn’t, but consider this line said by Apollon Media’s new owner Mark Sneider in the feature-length movie TIGER & BUNNY -THE RISING=:
You…are more like a racoon that a tiger
That’s it. Just that line. And if you think of a Racoon then you (at least if you’re Japanese) will think of Rascal! After that, T&B fans would quietly carry around Rascal goods. To think that it would be made into an official collaboration…
It was a super cute collaboration, and there were huge lines in Akihabara right that morning. It was a huge hit.
They are already sold out, but these leather bags had Kotetsu and Barnaby motifs. They have great quality and they are simple enough to be used daily. Yet, people who know T&B will surely notice. They are stylish bags and they were also purchased by people who had no idea about the anime.
There are now a lot of clothing collaborations with famous brands such as BEAMS. Of course, there are figure, clothing, and accessories collaboration available that can be used for everyday wear.
Classical Music Concert: THE SOUND OF TIGER & BUNNY
A concert for fans of T&B, featuring the BGM of the TV Series was held for two years in a row in 2015 and 2016. The BMG is even better when you hear it live.
The themed cafe to end after 3 years
Namco has been running the Cafe & Bar Characro feat. the TIGER & BUNNY movie for three whole years. Usually anime collaboration cafes don’t run for a very long time. It’s really rare for an anime to live this long.
Fans could visit Characro to enjoy Kotetsu’s fried rice and original drinks. The cafe also held special events on the characters’ birthday. The food tasted good, and there was a lot of variation.
The cafe will close its doors in January, 2017. It has been an amazing ride, and I am already considering to write an article about my experiences there. Please look forward to it!
Put TIGER & BUNNY in your anime to-watch list!
It has been five years since the TV series started broadcast. For those of you that have seen the series, how about watching it again? For those of you that haven’t, how about giving it a go?
The world is well developed and in every episode I felt so excited that I laughed and cried in almost every scene. The animation and CG are also very beautiful and the colours are very bright.
I have already seen it many times and I personally believe that it’s one of the best original anime. So please get round to watching the TIGER & BUNNY anime before the release of the Hollywood adaptation!
