On September 2, Manga.Tokyo attended a special movie preview event of Ajin -Shougeki- held in Odaiba Cinema Mediage.
The event was hosted by Thank You Tatsuo (a Japanese comedian), and the guests were the cast members, Mamoru Miyano (as Kei Nagai), Yoshimasa Hosoya (as Kaito), Daisuke Hirakawa (as Kouji Tanaka) as well as Hiroyuki Seshita (General director), and Hiroaki Ando (Director).
It was a wonderful preview event where we had the chance to learn more about the staff and the movie’s highlights.
“We could let all of our thoughts out to the world.”
In response to a question about his thoughts on the last installment, Miyano said “I’m very delighted. We could let all of our thoughts out to the world through this brand-new story which goes a completely different way from the original. I’d really like to share this wonderful experience with everyone.” He also told us that we get to see the main character Kei’s new heroic aspects in this movie in contrast to the TV series.
The voice actor Hosoya mentioned that they adopted a pre-scoring method* for voice dubbing and that he was actually surprised himself that he managed to voice-act so well in this last installment.
*Pre-scoring is a method in which drawings and images are created in accordance with pre-recorded audio tracks and voices.
Following Hosoya, Hirakawa mentioned the pre-scoring method and said that the production team tried to bring the best out of it. He also expressed his excitement saying “I was extremely impressed by all these incredible animations as well as the story that goes far beyond my imagination”.
Hiroyuki Seshita and Hiroaki Ando both expressed their relief saying “We’re very glad we got this far”, and mentioned the big change in the main character, “As we all know, he used to be indeed an awful character who didn’t deserve to be a main character but now that’s not true. He grew up to be a much better man who’s capable of moving everyone’s heart so, please stay tuned for what he can show you in this movie.”
As with every creation, the people involved in the process want to express something, their passion,”We focused on a sense of suspense in the first installment and in the second installment, we focused on a dynamic progression of the story as well as the breadth of the world along with the increase in new characters. And finally, we worked hard to express the further breadth of the world as well as an accelerated sense of speed in the last trilogy.”.
Hosoya takes the coolest part.
One of the movie’s highlights is definitely the future of Kei Nagai and Koji Tanaka, the two Ajin who later take different paths. Hirakawa (as Koji Tanaka) said about the scene where Kei and Tanaka face each other inside Kei’s psychic world, “In that scene, I tried to play Tanaka in a more provocative way”.
Kei and Kaito’s share a strong bond, and after showing an appropriate screenshot Miyano made a comment for Hosoya, “You sometimes take the coolest part and overshadow us”.
Hosoya revealed that he was playing Kei blindly and naturally in the first installment and from the second installment he acted differently while thinking “That’d be nice if people find out Kaito is Ajin.”.
When Miyano asked Hosoya the reason why Kaito likes Kei, he said, “You’ll know when you see it.” mimicking the movie’s catch-phrase “You’ll know when you die.”.
About the theme song
The movie’s theme song is called The Birth and it’s written by the voice actor Miyano (as Kei Nagai).
We heard that Miyano received a direct offer from the director, Hiroyuki Seshita, who is very particular about music.
According to Miyano, he thought upbeat rock music would best suit Ajin’s intense atmosphere and he showed his feelings towards the self-written lyrics in which he faithfully expressed Ajin’s world by putting himself in Kei’s place. “I believed there must have been some special lyrics only I could write. I put all my emotions and passion into the song.” We’ve also heard Hiroaki Ando shed tears when he first read the lyrics and Seshita was fully convinced of the song’s quality.
The concept of the main character actually singing the theme song himself was amazing.
