Three years after the TV series, the story finally continues with the anime movie The Irregular at Magic High School The Movie -The Girl Who Summons the Stars- ! On 17 June 2017, the premiere screening included a stage event and took place at Shibuya’s Wald 9 in Tokyo.
Yuichi Nakamura (voice of Tatsuya Shiba), Saori Hayami (Miyuki Shiba), Yumi Uchiyama (Erika Chiba), Takuma Terashima (Leonhart Saijo), Yoko Hikasa (Angelina Kudo Shields) and Konomi Kohara (Kokoa) appeared on stage during the event.
The Movie Features a New Story
The science fiction fantasy novel The Irregular at Magic High School by Tsutomu Sato got an anime adaptation in 2014. In this series, magic is a technique. The story of this movie is original and written by Sato himself. Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba and their friends make use of their long spring vacation to visit the Ogasawara Islands. A girl named Kokoa appears in front of Tatsuya and the rest as they are relaxing, kicking off the beginning of a new adventure.
Enjoying the Extravagant Size of the Cinema
Even though the staff is different from the TV series, it does not have a negative effect on the movie, since they use the big scale of the cinema to their advantage and do things that can’t be done in a TV series.
Overload of Fan-service
As the movie uses vacation as a main story element, right from the start we get to see a lot of fan service. At some point you might ask yourself if this amount of fan service is okay. It’s not just easy on the eyes, as the voice actors also speak with a tone of emotion. In general, the clothing designs for this movie are outstanding as we get not only to see the characters in their school uniform, but also in their everyday clothes. That puts an accent on their unique personalities!
The theme song ‘Speed Star’ by GARNiDELiA adds a lot to the atmosphere when it is playing in the background. Hikasa and Kohara, who only joined the cast for this movie, blended in well with the cast from the TV series and could think back to the recording as a fun experience.
‘Just as expected from Onii-sama!’
It’s as if the staff agreed to put as much fan service into this movie as humanly possible, which the staff also confirmed themselves. It takes a lot of time to produce an anime, starting with test runs until the real thing is finished, so we can see the care with which the movie was produced. This movie is practically produced to show off the ‘best’ Onii-sama ever. The viewers get to enjoy the cool Tatsuya throughout the whole movie. The ‘Onii-sama Love’ can’t be contained, especially not by Miyuki.
It was requested that Hayami says a word to Onii-sama, to which she used a similar line like in the movie. It was all like she expected from her Onii-sama. Nakamura ended the event, saying that the movie enhanced the charm of the series.
This week, cinema visitors received a short novel by Tsutomu Sato called Bishojo Maho Senshi Plasmarina. Other presents are scheduled to be given out starting on Week Two and are being carefully prepared right now. Limited goods are also being sold in various cinemas all throughout Japan, which can only be bought there.
Even with its big dose of fan service, the movie is still action-packed and fascinating and the story develops with a good pace. It is also recommended to go and watch the movie more than once, as there are always new details to be discovered. While watching it, you probably will end up saying, ‘Just as expected from Onii-sama!’ as many times as Miyuki.
