‘Animate Ikebukuro Flagship Store’ isn’t just an Anime Holy Land for Japanese fans, but it is where all anime fans all over the world dream of visiting one day.
I have attended an ‘ALL OUT’ special event with voice actors, which was held to celebrate its anime adaptation. This is based on a popular manga series currently published in a monthly magazine.
Animate Ikebukuro Flagship Store is always popular among anime fans soaking into Japan’s anime culture. However, on the day of the event, it was considerably filled with feverish excitement.

Based on the manga series ‘ALL OUT!!’ published in the monthly magazine ‘Morning Two’ (Kodansha), the anime adaptation is scheduled to air as the first rugby anime ever in TV anime history! (Premier in the fall, 2016)
In the sport of rugby, there is no such thing as an ace striker or No.4 batter. Anybody can grab a chance to stand in the limelight.
The story begins on the day of the entrance ceremony at Kanagawa High School. A total rugby beginner called Gion joins the rugby team. He is small, but his gutsy and never-give-up spirit is way bigger than others’. Other members are Iwashimizu, Hachioji and Sekizan. Iwashimizu is Gion’s classmate, who has been hesitant to devote himself to rugby because of his past. Hachioji, the sub captain, is great with looking after other the teammates. Sekizan is the captain and has an overwhelming power over the others and a fiery passion for rugby. Each of them has varied physical abilities and personalities, but they all grow together being rubbed and pushed through their youth…as if they are aiming to get to the very top of the world stage by giving their best shots.
Mr. Shoya Chiba (Left: as Kenji Gion) and Mr. Yuto Adachi (Right: as Sumiaki Iwashimizu)
These two actors energetically came out onto the stage! Even at the very beginning of the event, the excitement level there just went skyrocketed!
When Mr. Adachi said ‘this is going to be a big hit this summer’, Chiba quickly responded ‘it won’t be out until the fall…that triggered laughter at the event.
At first, they shared their stories, such as how often they accidentally used the word ‘ALL OUT’ in conversations after they officially got their roles. In addition, even though they’re not going to be on an actual rugby field, they had been influenced by this anime and started weight training.
After this, Mr. Chiba introduced the anime that was the very first anime on rugby in anime history.
The Japanese rugby team beat South Africa last year, as a result, rugby fever swept Japan. (Especially, a player called Goromaru became very popular among Japanese people.) So, people often asked him if this anime was following the trend. According to Mr. Chiba, the truth is that the TV adaptation was already planned before the fever. How timely and miraculous is that!
*Rugby in Japan had never been this big in the past. This crazy rugby fever will give this anime a good boost to success.
Here is Mr. Chiba introducing the anime at the beginning. He looks cute in here standing so still with his feet close together. Female fans kept on yelling in admiring shrieks to his sweet look!
Mr. Chiba got a call from his agency telling him, ‘you got a role in ALL OUT’.
According to him, he was just surprised that to have actually passed and got the role of Hachioji, which was not necessarily his kind of character.
A week after that, one of the staff from the agency said to him, ‘I have something to tell you regarding the role in ALL OUT…’ The tone of his voice was somewhat quiet, and so that made Mr. Chiba think that he had missed that role in the end. However, the staff actually said that Mr. Chiba actually got the role of the main character, which was a total surprise to him.
Prior to the audition, Mr. Chiba had been getting ready for other roles as well. So, when he was asked to act the role of Gion on the day of the audition, he did it successfully and that led him to the main role.
Mr. Adachi did his talk with lots of actions, and the fans loved his funny but cute side that came up here and there during his talk.
Mr. Adachi thought that Iwashimizu was similar to him.
So, it seems like it was natural for him to get this role. However, in reality, he was nowhere near confident to get this role because of really bad stage fright at the audition. Instead, he was sure that he had failed the audition.
*Even at this point of the talk, he already introduced himself as ‘acting as Yuto Adachi…’ The fans got what he meant by ‘really bad stage fright’ when they heard this mistake and convincingly burst into laughter.
Apparently, when he gets nervous, he starts to talk in the Ibaraki dialect. There were some giggles when he introduced himself at the audition.
He acted out his character at the audition without the dialect, but when he said ‘thank you very much’ at the end of it, the dialect just slipped out. The audition ended with a roar of laughter. So, he called his agency to say, ‘it finished, sorry, I think I missed it, thanks anyway’ in the dialect.
Then, he found out that he got the role in great surprise!
When he looked back why he got the role, he believed that ‘that role was the one that he really wished for’. So, his acting skills were of course vital, but his ‘passion towards this character’ must have played as the key to finalize their decision.
We’ll see intensity and strong passion in the theme of this anime as well as in the characters. So, we’re looking forward to Mr. Adachi’s intense passion, too.
There was a request for both actors to act out their favorite lines with some scene description. They happily responded to this by getting ready.
The relaxed atmosphere quickly turned to a serious one. The actors immediately pulled the fans into their acting world, and this attracted all the fans there.
Enjoy the video clips below.
‘Hey, Udo! That guy is holding our ball!’
‘There is no ace striker or No.4 batter out there. You become the main player as long as you hold the ball.’
Amazingly, they showed up in synced outfits. At this moment, the event created the most laughter-filled and warm atmosphere.
They began to talk about their outfits.
Neither of them had a stylist for this event, so they had to pick out their own clothes for the day.
Mr. Adachi didn’t know about not having a stylist until the last minute, and he rushed to buy something to wear just before the event.
Amazingly, what they were wearing was very similar and even the brand was actually the same.
Normally, when two actors appear at the same event together, they intentionally differ their fashion style from each other. However, it wasn’t like that this time.
It actually shows how close they were and how much they were in sync.
According to them, they often go out for drinks together and talk about ALL OUT!! for several hours. It sounds like they passionately care about this anime.
(Honestly, they were intense and non-stoppable when they were talking about their work and this anime!)
Mr. Adachi asked ‘is it for my birthday?’ It was just a coincidence, and laughter filled the event space again.
An important announcement is coming up after this.
From July 1st (Fri) which is Kenji Gion’s birthday, they are going to reveal one voice actor a day from the unannounced voice actors, who act as the 27 players of the rugby team at Kanagawa High School.
You can find out about this on its homepage and even check out the character relationship chart to go over ALL OUT!! before the TV premiere. We won’t be able to keep our eyes off of the official site and Twitter.
Importantly, there is big surprise waiting for us at the end of this revelation of all the voice actors on July 28th (Thurs)!
The funny thing is that the 28th happens to be Mr. Adachi’s birthday! However, it is apparently a total accident to have this date as the day of the important announcement for ALL OUT!! There are certainly many miracles happening to this event.
For the TV anime, other than the two actors above, it is official that some well-known voice actors like Mr. Yoshimasa Hosoya (as Takuya Sekizan) and Mr. Ryota Osaka (as Mutsumi Hachioji) are joining the main cast.
There is still plenty of time until the TV premier, but I’m sure fans are going to be well entertained without getting bored during this waiting period. We’ll be able to rush into the world of ALL OUT!! with our excitement at its max.
