Fall 2017 Anime: Official Twitter Hashtags & Pages
The MANGA.TOKYO staff had its share of summer. Now, all we wish is for the hot and humid weather to go away and give its place to the red and cool autumn.
Oldcodex (styled OLDCODEX) is a unique Japanese rock band formed by voice actor and singer Ta_2 and painter Yorke (styled YORKE.) Ta_2’s strong and beautiful singing voice can send the most powerful messages to the fans. While Ta_2 sings, painter Yorke performs on the stage by painting dynamic artwork. At every concert they hold, Oldcodex gives an amazing one-and-only performance that only they can create.
On 12-13 September, Oldcodex performed at Zepp Tokyo as part of their OLDCODEX Tour 2017 ‘they go, Where?’ The tour began on 3 September in commemoration of the release of their fifth album.
‘They go, Where?’, which is also the title of their album, is the question Oldcodex has been asking themselves and their fans. Through this tour, they seem to be searching for the answer. In this article, I would like to report on Oldcodex’s concert held on 12 September!
The enormous stage setting, which first captured my eyes, was made just for this tour. The stage was painted with vivid psychedelic colors, and the words ‘they go, Where?’, the title of the album and tour, was also written on many places. On both sides of the stage, canvases were set up for Yorke to paint on. This unique stage setting feels exactly as an Oldcodex concert!
The two members appeared on stage, and their concert began with the song ‘problem’, the first track on their new album. Furiously headbanging, Ta_2 sang energetically and shouted out his deepest emotions. Yorke painted the canvases with vivid colors and heated up the fans with his art performance. In response to Oldcodex’s one-and-only performance, the audience cheered loudly and raised their hands. The following songs were ‘Get Up to Go’ and ‘Faith In ME’. During ‘Faith In ME’, Ta_2 opened his arms and looked at the audience. It was as if he were telling the audience, ‘You can do much better, right?’ Because ge believes in his audience and knows they can reach a higher goal, Ta_2 continues to challenge them and send his strong messages.
The next songs were the up-tempo rock music, ‘Seek your turn’ and ‘Catal Rhythm’. During the hook of ‘#4’, which is a song that Oldcodex had not performed for quite a while, the two members and the fans all showed the number ‘4’ with their fingers. When the band performed ‘Backed out’, the fans all started to bang their heads in sync with the mysterious melody. In such a crazy atmosphere, Ta_2 put more and more passion into his singing voice. Yorke’s performance continued to heat up, too. Up to the seventh song, he painted a beautiful psychedelic butterfly trapped in a spider’s web. The ever-changing artwork is something that the fans can see only at this exact moment of Oldcodex’s concert.
Up to this point, Oldcodex had finished performing many of their loud up-tempo songs, but of course, they do not just sing rock music. From the following song, ‘loose my breath’, the concert entered the section with the melodic songs. The fans all listened silently to Ta_2’s beautiful soft voice and got absorbed in his sorrowful and sweet singing. During ‘A Black Toy’, a new canvas appeared in the center of the stage. They showed us a performance that we had never seen before. Then, during ‘Where’d They Go?’, he shouted out to the fans, ‘Those wings have freedom!’ This was the answer to Oldcodex’s question, ‘they go, Where?’ Yorke had expressed how the band can reach their goals alone and that they were not something that others decide; they were something that Oldcodex grabs on their own.
During the following talking segment, Ta_2 mentioned, ‘In order to accomplish what we want to do, I will, and we will, continue to reach out our hands.’ Also, Yorke told the fans that Oldcodex will continue to answer the question ‘they go, Where?’ by performing on stage.
The concert moved on to the powerful songs, ‘reel’, ‘Deal with’, ‘Anthem’, and ‘Scribble, and Beyond’. The audience cheered energetically as if they were at a fun party. They all jumped up and down with the music, reached their arms forward, and sang along. No one seemed to care about how tired they would feel the next day. Oldcodex responded to the audience’s cheers with Ta_2’s beautiful singing and Yorke’s dynamic performance.
Ta_2 shouted to the audience, ‘Thank you for emptying your minds and showing us your amazing smiles.’ Then, the band performed ‘Million from Codex’, the last song on their album.
During the encore, the band performed three songs. The two members also announced that the title of their first arena tour, which is to be held in January and February 2018, will be OLDCODEX Arena Tour 2018 ‘we’re Here!’. ‘We’re Here!’ must be another of Oldcodex’s answers to the question ‘they go, Where?’.
