You probably already know that Musawo’s manga Love and Lies (Koi to Uso) is part of the Summer 2017 anime lineup, but it will also be turned into a live action movie. Recordings for it started in May in Ibaraki Prefecture. Our friends from Comic Natalie went to the filming site to bring you this report!
This movie, directed by Takeshi Furusawa, tells the story of Aoi Nisaka (played by Aoi Morikawa) and how she finds love in a world where the government decides who you are to marry. Unlike in the manga, which is about a boy and two girls, this time the story is about a girl and two boys. One of the boys is Aoi’s childhood friend Yuuto Shiba (played by Takumi Kitamura) and the other one is her assigned marriage partner Sosuke Takachiho (played by Kanta Sato).
Protagonist Aoi is a clumsy and straightforward girl. Morikawa said, ‘If anything, I think I am a rather dark person, so if Aoi Morikawa comes out too strong, it might become a rather dark movie. So I am thinking as many positive and bright thoughts as possible while filming.’ Kitamura said, ‘Even if it is not written in the script, I make it a point to smile while doing my lines. I hope that the character’s kindness will be transmitted through that.’ Sato said, ‘Takachiho, the character I play, is changing a lot throughout the movie so I keep this gap in mind while filming.’
The picture from the set shows the cast talking to director Furusawa, who also worked on the live action movies of ReLife Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu. Morikawa revealed, ‘Yesterday we filmed the kiss between Aoi and Takachiho, so the director came up to us and said “I don’t know, I’d like you to do it this way. I wonder if that will make it a movie that lets the heart skip a beat.” [laugh]’ And Kitamura even copied the way the director talked when he said, ‘And the other day, he came running over and whispered “That just now was amazing!” Then I will feel like I am doing good and the work turns into fun.’
At night, they filmed the scene of Shiba confessing his love to Aoi when Takachiho appears for the first time. The director was there with the cast to discuss what Shiba would think in this scene. This was the first scene where the three of them acted together, so when they were asked about the scene, Sato said, ‘My thoughts went all over the place when I read the script. But Aoi-chan’s expressions are so vivid, when I see them in front of me, I react just in the right way.’ Kitamura added, ‘There are some facial expressions of Shiba that come out because of Aoi Nikasa’s smile. So in a sense, she is pulling me with her.’ They both praised their co-actress.
Kitamura, who has read the original manga to be prepared for this movie, said, ‘There is one love that starts freely between two people and another one that starts because of a government notice. After all, it isn’t a very ordinary love story, I think.’All three actors don’t like the so-called ‘kira
All three actors don’t like the so-called ‘kira-kira movies’ (happy smiley love stories usually aimed at girls), but Morikawa said, ‘When I first read the script, I thought it wasn’t just another one of those youthful love stories. The ending also isn’t just a happy end.’ Sato said, ‘I didn’t want to make Sosuke a character that seemed like he could have come out of any other shojo manga. While I think the story seems like a simple youthful love story, the director wants to make it very realistic and took advice from many people.”
Love and Lies is coming to Japanese cinemas this fall.
