The popular yuri manga Netsuzou Trap -NTR- by Naoko Kodama draws a lot of attention with its shocking catchphrase, ‘We have a secret we can’t tell our boyfriends…’
Before the July broadcast, there was an advanced screening of Episode 1 and 2 as well as a talk show with the cast and director on 25 June at TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku in Tokyo. Participating in the talk show were Ai Kakuma (Yuma Okazaki, the protagonist), Hiromi Igarashi (Hotaru Mizushina, who toys with Yuma), and the general director Hisayoshi Hirasawa.
We have a secret we can’t tell our boyfriends.
The screen was surprisingly large!
At the invitation of the event host, Kakuma, Igarashi, and Hirasawa came onstage and were surprised at how large the screen was. They expressed their gratitude towards the attendees because it was decided to screen the episodes on a much bigger screen than was initially planned, which means there is growing interest in the work. The feeling of ‘otaku’ hung in the air with fans holding LED glow sticks (sometimes called ‘otaku sticks’). Seeing this, Kakuma said with a smile, ‘Today is not a cheer screening nor one of those special screenings with explosive sound [laugh]. So none of that today.’ Then, Igarashi said, ‘They are always carrying them as otaku etiquette, right?’ with a smile of admiration.
Lively from the start
During the greetings before the screening, they were asked to introduce the highlights of the anime without revealing any spoilers and they said in unison, ‘It’s amazing from the start. Will it begin from there?’ The first voice after the screening said, ‘See? It began from an amazing spot, right?’ Before the screening, Igarashi had said to pay attention to everyone’s beloved Takeda but after the screening she said, ‘Fujiwara’s impact at the end was so big that I don’t remember anything but him’, immediately changing the topic to Fujiwara. She expressed gratitude towards Daisuke Ono (the voice of Fujiwara) saying that if he wasn’t there, they wouldn’t be able to find any of Fujiwara’s good aspects. Okazaki compared the anime to the original manga saying, ‘They are going this far in the anime? I wonder if it’s okay to do that.’
Ryota Osaka (Takeda) takes out his stress on Ai Kakuma?!
When asked about memorable incidents from the recording sessions, it was revealed that they record three episodes at a time so they are working with all their might, therefore they are very grateful for the gifts of food from the staff. In response to the question ‘What gift do you recommend?’, Kakuma and Igarashi both said, ‘Inarizushi!’
About their characters, Igarashi said ‘I think Hotaru is hiding behind an iron wall or a mask. Right now, we have recorded up until Episode 9 but it only just feels like it has calmed down. At first, Hotaru gave off a bad aura in front of both Takeda and Yuma. I think she is only herself in front of Fujiwara.’
It seems that there were many times after the recordings when Ryota Osaka, who plays the pitiable character Takeda, would vent his frustrations about Yuma to Kakuma saying things like, ‘You are the worst’, and, ‘You’re an awful girl’. In response to this, Kakuma laughed and said, ‘I said, “It’s Hotaru’s fault” but Yuma’s position is gradually disappearing.’ They all spoke about the aspects of their characters that they relate to, such as Kakuma and Yuma’s indecisiveness and Igarashi and Hotaru’s strong emotions.
Also, Igarashi talked about the pitiful character Takeda saying that he is a character that would make one think ‘I’m glad the first boyfriend was Takeda’, inciting laughter from the audience. On the other hand, Kakuma said she doesn’t understand what is good about Fujiwara. She continued, ‘Only his face and his voice are good. The fact that he has a nice voice is his salvation. I want to properly search for his good points from now on’, praising Ono’s voice once again.
’Next time will be a cheer screening!!’
At the end of the talk show, they held a raffle to win a signed manga bundle and poster. There was an advertisement-like statement saying that the highlight of the badges currently on sale is the succinct expression and idol-like feel of both Takeda and Fujiwara, Hotaru’s devilish atmosphere, and Yuma’s indecisiveness, so you should buy all four versions.
During the final greeting, Kakuma said, ‘After Episode 3, the story gets deeper. Watching on a big screen like today and watching on your TV are two different experiences, so maybe you can discover new things. Please enjoy it! Igarashi said, ‘If the show becomes a hot topic, I want to do a cheer screening. Booing Fujiwara and saying “Do more!” to Yuma and Hotaru [laugh]. It is the type of anime where you want to share your impressions, so please enjoy both the anime and the manga and let’s have fun together again!’
TV anime Netsuzou Trap -NTR- goes on air in July. Yuma and Hotaru may keep their relationship a secret from their boyfriends but sharing your impressions of the anime with everyone is GOOD. The director himself requested that people get excited about the anime, so it will be interesting to see how Twitter reacts.
