See that disappointed person in the photo below? That’s me after our Hiroshima Toyo Carp lost to Nippon-Ham Fighters at the Japan Series…
I will keep cheering for the Carp even if something disheartening happens. That’s the Carp sprit!
To see our Carp become the champion for the first time in 32 years, I made multiple round trips between Hiroshima – Tokyo and Tokyo – Sapporo, and watched 5 out of 6 games. The result was two losses in the bottom of the ninth inning receiving two grand slams. But it’s not about winning. It’s about being able to cheer for Carp and expand my love for this team through the country!
The next best thing after baseball, the thing I was looking forward to after every single match was…
Hiroshima and Sapporo are both known for their delicious food. These trips were the perfect opportunity to try their local dishes.
However, there are too many choices. For example, there are countless okonomiyaki restaurants to choose from. As a manga reader, wouldn’t it be nice to decide what to eat by reading a manga book?
That’s exactly what we are going to do with the following two books!
In the Manpuku series, a local restaurant specialist is taking a manga writer on a food trip around town to impress her! I don’t know about the manga writer, but I was certainly impressed.
A reliable assistant => Shinkyu Chie no Manpuku Hiroshima
It’s a system in which local people can rediscover the charm of their local town => Local Gourmet Comic Essay : Manpuku Sapporo
These manga are fantastic! Every dish that appears in its pages makes me want to try them. And do I did. I went to try the food that appears in this manga in Hiroshima and Sapporo!
Super Delicious Hamburger Steak at Sapporo!
I love meat so I really wanted to go try this hamburger steak restaurant.
I didn’t try the pork or beef, so next time I would like to try beef …or both!
Local Gourmet Comic Essay : Manpuku Sapporo
I was puzzled by the word ‘Yezo Deer’ on the menu! Hamburger steak using deer meat? How would that taste?
Local Gourmet Comic Essay : Manpuku Sapporo
I want to try everything!
So I went and ordered a lot of plates but…
Everything on this plate was so delicious- right down to the last drip of sauce!
The taste was out of this world. It didn’t the usual meat smell and it had a distinctive rustic beauty. The vegetable sides were perfect, including the sauce. If I ever visit Sapporo again, I will definitely make the time to visit this restaurant!
That day, Carp lost the game by receiving a grand slam, but thanks to this hamburger steak, I was able to compensate for my previous sad mood. I was happy.
There Are Super Delicious Hamburger Steak Restaurants in West Hiroshima!
As I said, I love meat so much that their horumonyaki menu got me too excited to sleep at night.
Shinkyu Chie no Manpuku Hiroshima
I want to fly back to Hiroshima to have another try!
You can have offal dishes in Tokyo as well, but I have never heard about offal hamburger steak! Every cell in my body was craving that offal plate!
So I went there and tried it.
Its boiling sauce was so photogenic!
So delicious! It’s just like in the manga: a whole offal is used in the hamburger steak! The more you chew on it, the more meat juice fills your mouth. It feels as if receiving the power from a cow!
The day I had this hamburger steak was the day Carp lost to Nippon-Ham Fighters and thus lost its chance to become No.1 in Japan. So, if I hadn’t received the power from this offal hamburger steak which was served by the owner saying about the match, ‘that was too bad’, I wouldn’t have made it.
I actually went to all 6 restaurants that appeared in the two manga books!
Aside from the two restaurants that I mentioned above, I had okonomiyaki and a conger eel bowl in Hiroshima, and a seafood bowl in Sapporo, which are both mentioned in the two manga books. There is also a sandwich here that I had tried last year, but it was sold out. I can’t remember how many times I smack my lips at them. All the restaurants were great!!
I really regret not being able to try the sandwich this year. I had it last year and it was so delicious. So I really wanted to try it again!!
As a side effect, I gained three kg, but I don’t care!! The food was the reason I could keep my spirits up even after the successive Carp defeats. To eat is to live!
If you want to visit these six restaurants, or if you want to learn more about the different food places you can visit in Sapporo and Hiroshima, read these manga!
Manga is the Best Traveling Companion
This is the first time that I really appreciated how useful a manga book can be as a food travel guide. You can put a lot of information inside: recommended menus, sale points, food photos, prices, reviews, insider knowledge, and so many more. The format of the manga makes it easier to search and absorb the information.
The Manpuku series has sixteen volumes! It features a lot of big cities like Tokyo, Sendai, Fukuoka, Osaka, and Nagoya so why not use them to study the local food scene if you are visiting on business, travel, or maybe a Japan Series match?
