After the premiere of the movie Macross Delta Movie: Gekijou no Walküre and the release of the new single CD ‘Walküre wa Uragiranai’ (Walküre won’t betray), Walküre was back on stage at Yokohama Arena for the first time in a year. They are Mikumo (JUNNA), Freyja (Minori Suzuki), Kaname (Kiyono Yasuno), Reina (Nao Toyama), and Makina (Nozomi Nishida). Just like their second concert, their third one was held across two consecutive days. The final concert on 25 February was also live-streamed in movie theaters across Japan as well as in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Korea.
Yokohama Arena was packed to the brim with Walküre fans who were eagerly awaiting the start of the concert, even in the standing room. When the Kingdom of Windermere’s Prince Heinz’s ‘Song of the Wind’ echoed throughout the venue, the threat of Var Syndrome outbreak increased. In order to calm down the situation, the tactical music unit Walküre descended to the stage. A gigantic screen showed the new opening scene with the animated Walküre members climbing into the Valkyrie, exciting the fans. Following the harmonious announcement: ‘Welcome to Walküre World’, the members’ silhouettes appeared on stage. When they started to sing ‘Koi! Halation THE WAR’ (Love! Halatation THE WAR), the fans welcomed them with deafening cheers and ‘Deculture’ calls. They sang the lively self-introduction song ‘Youkoso Walküre World e’(Welcome to Walküre world) while the fans were still coming down from the high of the opening. The song gave the whole arena a feeling of unity.
Walküre looked back upon their 2017 activities during the first talk segment and then sang their dazzling new song ‘Change!!!!!’. It’s an interesting song in which the main melody and the chorus interchange at a dizzying speed while dancing in equally changeable dance formations. Its choreography was the recreation of the truly impressive live concert scene from the movie. After their remarkable performance, they sang ‘Absolute 5′. Its lyrics, ‘if we lost any one of us, we would lose our meaning’, expressed their feelings and connection between them.
A starry sky spread at the back of the stage, and they sang ‘Kaze wa Yokokunaku Fuku’ (The wind blows without warning). They looked as though they were singing in space. The souls of the fans seemed to reverberate with the vocals of Freyja (Minori) and Mikumo (JUNNA). In the middle of the 6th song, ‘Neo Stream’ the five singers got on a moving stage and moved around the audience. Freyja (Minori) and Mikumo (JUNNA) sang ‘Love! Thunder Glow’ close to the fans and Reina (Nao) and Makina (Nozomi) did the same with ‘Giritic♡BEGINNER.’
In the middle of the concert, Kaname (Kiyono), Reina (Nao), and Makina (Nozomi) appeared with the explosive sounds of fireworks and sang ‘Namidame Bakuhatsuon’ (Explosive sound of teary eyes). Next, Freyja (Minori) sang ‘God Bless You’ in a thick snowfall created by the fans’ light sticks. The song is about Freyja whose Windermerean race have a short lifespan of only 30 years. I was impressed by her singing the song of sad relics with such tender facial expressions as if relishing in the pleasure of how it feels to love someone.
The singers sang ‘Walküre Attack!’ while moving around the venue by the multi drone transporter followed by ‘AXIA ~ Daisuki de Daikirai~’ (AZIA ~I love you and hate you) sung by Kaname (Kiyono). The screen at the back of the stage was streaming the famous single combat scene between Messer, the ace pilot of Delta Fight, and Keith, White Knight of Windermere, bringing more excitement to the venue. After the scene was shown, Freyja, Mikumo, and Kaname sang ‘GIRAFFE BLUES’ to commemorate the honorable death of Messer. The live concert and the story were synchronized at that point. It was a very Walküre-like performance.
After a romantic introduction of ‘Ai, Oboeteimasuka’ (Do you remember love?), the singers reappeared on stage in different costumes. The latter part of the concert had a much larger-scale stage set. When they were singing ‘Walküre ga Tomaranai’, the stage itself began to move. It moved far above the audience seats while they were performing. In the Macross anime series, there are many Walküre live concerts scenes in which the audience are looking up at the stage far above their heads. Walküre’s live concerts in the real world often use 3D space effectively. The fans in the venue were surprised to watch the recreation of the stage in the air in the real world. When the stage reached the end row of the audience seats, Freyja joined Mikumo to sing ‘Ikenai Borderline~Album Ver.~’ (Borderline You Shouldn’t Cross~Album Ver~) in which Freyja sang the main vocals in the second chorus. When the stage moved to the center of the venue, they performed ‘Ichidodake no Koi nara’ (If this love comes only once) and ‘Zettai Reido θ Novatic’ (Absolute Zero θ Novatic), which accentuated the five singers’ brilliant harmonies. They seemed to be relaxed enough to wave to the fans below when they sang ‘Hametsu no Junjou’ (Destructive Purity).
After showing off their power to wow the audience with their songs, they performed two new songs consecutively. ‘Walküre wa Uragiranai’ was created by the same songwriting duo as ‘Absolute 5’ and had a powerful impact. The song makes us realize why Walküre is capable of suppressing an outbreak of Var syndrome and whipping fans into a frenzy. It’s because they have kept singing and living up to fans’ as well as members’ expectations. Next to the powerful song is ‘Dancin’ in the Moonlight’, the ending theme to their theatrical movie. It was an energetic dance song with many different aspects including beautiful harmonies, rap, and complex choruses. It was easy to realize that they had been smiling and enjoying themselves from the very beginning of the concert. Their relaxed smiles demonstrated their deep connections to each other and development as individuals. This song was the best choice to conclude their concert with their smiles as it illustrated Walküre at this moment very well.
The encores for each day featured different guest singers! On the first day, Sheryl Nome starring May’n sang ‘Diamond Crevasse’ together with Mikumo (JUNNA), and ‘Bokura no Senjou’ (Our Battlefield) with Walküre. Megumi Nakajima (Ranka Lee) appeared on the second day and sang ‘Seikan Hikou’ (Flight Among the Stars) with Freyja (Minori) and ‘Anata no oto’ (Your Sound) on her own. She also sang ‘Fukakuteisei☆COSMIC MOVEMENT’ (Uncertainty COSMIC MOVEMENT) with the five members of Walküre. The audience was intoxicated by the miraculous co-starred performance which surpassed time and space.
During the second encore, each member talked about their thoughts on Walküre and this live concert, and then expressed their appreciation towards their fans. Afterward, they performed ‘Run ga Pikkatto Hikattara’ (When the Rune sparkles) utilizing the mobile stage. The members and the fans sang together creating resounding chorus which could be heard not only beyond Yokohama Arena but also in the galaxy. The live concert wrapped up with their shout. ‘Gori Gori Attack!’
‘I was apprehensive before the concert, wondering if we could do better than our last one, as it was superb. I think we did better than before. I had a feeling that I left something undone for the TV series, therefore I’m glad that I was able to play Makina again and breathe life into her in the movie. Now I feel I became the real Makina during this concert. Your support let me play Makina again. I hope we’ll have more concerts as Walküre. Please keep watching the Macross series!’ (Nozomi Nishida)
‘I truly appreciate each member of Walküre. I was moved when JUNNA said she would sing until she’s blue in the face. So I decided I’d dance until I dropped. I did until I got wobbly legs. While I was watching the movie, I felt that the members of Walküre, both the anime characters and us, were truly united as one, and the Walküre world has just begun. I hope Walküre and I as an individual can develop further and see you all again one day! I believe the day will come soon and until then, keep supporting us!’ (Nao Toyama)
‘I was overjoyed when I was told that we were going to have a live concert at Yokohama Arena, as I didn’t expect it at all. Although I was under pressure, I enjoyed so much these two days. I’m glad everything went off without a hitch. Our goal for this concert was “sing until we are blue in the face”, like the phrase in the lyrics of “Walküre wa Uragiranai”. I hope we did just that. I felt I was taught about the meaning of singing when I watched Mikumo in the movie. I think we managed to portray Walküre well due to the connection of us five. I’d love to keep singing as Mikumo until the day I lose my voice.’ (JUNNA)
‘I’d never experienced such fun in my life before. I was so happy and enjoyed myself. I was on this stage at Yokohama Arena last year thinking this it was the end of Walküre. However, I’m back here after the release of the movie. I now believe what Freyja said: “If you try to fly you can fly. We can do anything if we try.” I think Walküre proved Freyja’s words were true. My heart will be staying with Freyja forever. I’ll keep singing with her. I appreciate you for supporting me to stand on this stage again. Thank you.’ (Minori Suzuki)
‘When I watched the new movie, I was certain that Macross Delta would be written into the Macross series history books. Thank you very much for supporting us and Macross Delta. I appreciate you for staying with us during the series! This concert made me realise that I really love to sing Walküre’s songs as Walküre with the other 4 members. Singing is my life for me and I’d love to see you again on stage. Until then, please keep supporting us!’ (Kiyono Yasuno)
