On 26 June, a pre-screening and talk event took place in Tokyo for Musawo’s Love and Lies (Koi to Uso) anime adaptation. Manga author Musawo herself was present at the event, as well as chief editor Kenichiro Shinohara, and producer Takamasa Takeuchi.
In Love and Lies, the government decides who you will marry and free love is not allowed. But Yukari Nejima, the hero of the story, is already in love with Misaki Takazaki. When his government notice reaches him, it tells him that his life-partner is a person called Lilina Sanada. Where will their love lead them?
After the first two episodes finished screening, the three guests appeared on stage. It was the first time for Musawo to participate in a stage event, and she expressed her happiness about this anime adaptation by saying, ‘It’s amazing how this story, that I thought of while walking my dog, is being turned into an anime and gets seen by so many people.’ Shinohara talked about the long production period, ‘It will already start airing next week! It was over in the blink of an eye.’
The talk segment started with a secret talk about the production. Love and Lies was created for a love comedy competition in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. Sadly, the manga didn’t win that competition, but entered another competition later at Manga Box, where it is now being published. Musawo confessed that she hasn’t really read many love comedy stories before. Shinohara then said, ‘I think it actually is more like an anti-love comedy in the beginning.’ Musawo added, ‘With Love and Lies I wrote a story that I might have wanted to read myself when I was in high school.’
When she was asked where she got the idea that the government would decide who gets married, she answered, ‘In the news, they often report on girls who are worried about marriage or men who are not able to get married. That’s when I thought, wouldn’t it be easier if the partner was already decided by someon? And I thought it would be interesting if the government did it as a countermeasure to the falling birthrate. The theme is endless love. Because it is a kind of human interaction, it is no easy thing and has a certain energy of its own. The current generation is very busy because they have many hobbies and thus they would be tired easily if it’s a love that uses a lot of energy, I thought.’ And with these kind of thoughts the special setting of Love and Lies was born.
The talk also extended to the original manga and what will happen from now on. Musawo said she already had the main points until the end thought through but added, ‘I want to have a convincing road to the conclusion. I will put a lot of effort into drawing it in a way that the readers will understand and agree with.’ Then she was asked about the two heroines, Misaki and Lilina. ‘I want to be able to draw their bodies differently. Lilina is thin and small and cute, she has the body of a doll that girls desire. Misaki has big breasts and isn’t too slim.’
At the end of the event, Shinohara revealed, ‘On 7 July 2017 a Love and Lies fan book will be released. There will be many things written in it that we couldn’t talk about in this short time, so make sure to read it. It also comes with a post card!’ Musawo also announced, ‘It has also been decided that Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Magazine will release a cut-out manga chapter. It will star a girl beloved by Nisaka.’
With her last words, Musawo said, ‘This is the first time I am meeting the people who read my manga and found it interesting. It is also thanks to you, the readers, that this anime adaptation is possible. The anime will start in July and the live action movie comes out in October, so there will be a lot of Love and Lies this year. But the manga will continue for about another two years, so please keep supporting me.’
The anime will start airing on 4 July 2017.
