On September 3, a ‘thanks’ greeting event of Kimi no Na wa took place at the TOHO Cinemas, Roppongi Hills.
Even though it’s been already a week since its release, the film has so far been showing no signs of waning.
At the venue, the director Makoto Shinkai, along with Ryunosuke Kamiki and Mone Kamishiraishi of the main cast showed up, sharing their great joy with all the fans gathered there.
During the opening remarks, Kamishiraishi said “I still can’t believe the film has been actually released a week ago”.
Although Shinkai said “I still can’t get any realistic feelings towards this success.”, he added “I’m very grateful to all the viewers” after seeing the enthusiastic fans who, most of them, have watched the film several times.
As of September 3, the number of viewers has reached the 2 million mark and the box-office revenue has already exceeded 2.7 billion yen. This means an average of 260,000 people per day visiting the movie theaters so far.
Hearing this staggering news, Kamiki responded in excitement “It’s already very hard to fill up the Tokyo dome!”
In response to the question “What’s your favorite scene in the film?”, Shinkai answered “I love the scene where Taki opens up his hand. That scene turned out really nice. I’m proud of it.”. The scene Kamiki picked as his favorite is the one where Mitsuha says “I’ll make it tomorrow.” to her family in a sleepy tone. According to Kamiki, he was deeply impressed by the natural facial expression Mitsuha showed in her everyday life. Kamishiraishi picked the scene when Taki calls Mitsuha’s name in the movie’s critical scene. Even though it’s just a single word, Kamishiraishi said it made her heart beat faster. Kamiki took the chance after Shinkai’s request and epically performed that scene on the stage. The fans welcomed them with wild applause. It was amazing to see these two outstanding cast members do what they do best, .
When it comes to talking about Kimi no Na wa, we couldn’t leave out the music by RADWIMPS.
Shinkai said that he has been creating music together with RADWIMPS for a year and half and ended up changing some of the images after being deeply inspired by their music. Kamiki, meanwhile, said he has been a huge fan of them since school and he especially likes the sexy feeling of the opening theme song, Yumetourou.
While everyone was excited about RADWIMPS, the members of the band suddenly showed up at the venue and surprised everyone.
Both fans and cast members were so thrilled that they welcomed them in such an excited way that the vocalist, Yojirou Noda, said that he still gets emotional as he recalls the days back in 2014. He was deeply touched by the movie even though he already knew what the story was like.
The surprise didn’t stop there. Noda started to sing the movie’s theme song, Zen-zen-zense, with his acoustic guitar. He wanted to show his gratitude to all the fans, and to Kamiki, Kamishiraishi, the production staff and the members who wrote the song together.
It was a magical moment as the acoustic version had a very different feeling compared to the studio version.
More surprisingly, Noda said to Kamishiraishi that he wants to sing together with her the ending theme song, Nandemonaiyo. After the song, Noda said that “this has been the best moment ever in my entire life!”.
Kamiki said that “Mitsuha singing this song adds much more meaning to this movie”.
Finally, Shinkai, looking back at this special event, said that he “had such an amazing time after spending two years on this movie. I am so proud of all those involved in this move. If there is anyone who hasn’t seen this yet, please visit the movie theater.”
