On 11 July 2017, Animate Cafe Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture reopened after an extensive renewal and relocation! Compared to the previous Animate Cafe Nagoya which opened in February 2014, the store is now twice the size.
The first collaboration after the reopening, which should be celebrated, is with the TV anime Katsugeki Touken Ranbu.
With the Tokyo cafe yet to open, this is the first time an Animate collaboration cafe has started in Nagoya. Katsugeki Touken Ranbu began airing in Japan on 1 July. With ufotable as the animation studio, this anime is quite a hot topic.
On the day before the reopening, there was an exhibition for the press. As special guests, Rika Tsuzuki and Natsuki Kamata from the idol group SKE48, which is based in Nagoya, attended the event.
Infiltrating the newly reopened Animate Cafe Nagoya!
The Animate Cafe Nagoya after the relocation is a one-minute walk away from the old Animate Cafe Nagoya. Via Inn hotel is close by and Animate Cafe Nagoya is located on the second floor of San Town Tsubaki main building.
When you open the door to the cafe, there are huge panels and wall scrolls featuring the characters from Katsugeki Touken Ranbu. The new cafe boasts twice the size of the old Animate Cafe Nagoya and the open space is influenced by the world of Touken Ranbu.
The collaboration menu has 7 dishes, from Horikawa Kunihiro ramen (¥920) to Tsurumaru Kuninaga’s white soup pasta (¥920) and other desserts and dishes. There are also 7 drinks on the menu including Izuminokami Kanesada’’s Acai drink (¥500) and Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki’s Caramel Chocolat Tea (¥500). Each item on the menu is based on a character and they are sure to excite any gourmet-loving heart.
Also, when you buy an item from the collaboration menu, you can get a random coaster (12 versions). The design was specially illustrated for this collaboration and will always remind you your visit to the cafe.
Inside the store, limited goods that can only be bought at Animate Cafes are on sale. Some of these goods include acrylic stand key rings (12 versions, ¥600), tin badges (12 version, ¥300), and a mini clear file set (3 types, ¥600 each).

Rika Tsuzuki and Natsuki Kamata paid a visit. As the two guests looked around the shop, they seemed very excited. ‘It’s so spacious!,’ they commented and said, ‘Look, there are panels!’ They also tried the foods Tonbokiri’s sandwich (¥920), Tsurumaru Kuninaga’s white soup pasta (¥920), Konnosuke’s fluffy cake and tail cookies (¥700), and the drinks Izuminokami Kanesada’s Acai drink (¥500), and Horikawa Kunihiro’s grapefruit drink ¥500).
They noted that the redcurrant floating on the top of Horikawa Kunihiro’s grapefruit drink is inspired by an earring and that the rusk in the Konnosuke’s fluffy cake and tail cookies were fried and would surely be loved by Konnosuke. The two of them surprised the staff with their extensive knowledge of the series. They showed their love for Touken Ranbu.

The event began at 1 o’ clock. The special guests from SKE48, Rika Tsuzuki and Natsuki Kamata took to the stage. The two are known to like anime and they have started up a ‘2D Club’ where Tsuzuki is the president and Kamata is the vice president. There are currently 11 members and they cosplay together and visit the cafe.
SKE48 is a an idol group based in Nagoya. Upon looking around the newly reopened Animate Cafe Nagoya and seeing it dyed with the world of Katsugeki Touken Ranbu, Kamata said, ‘I could feel the love that wants the fans to come and enjoy the world of the anime.’ Tsuzuki, who had visited Animate Cafe Nagoya before the renewal, said, ‘I am touched that it is bigger and more beautiful (compared to the old cafe). There is also more food.’
When they tried items from the collaboration menu, Tsuzuki was surprised that Tsurumaru Kuninaga’s white soup pasta was flavored with citrus. She said, ‘It was very like Tsurumaru so I was surprised,’ seeming to approve of the characters’ personalities hidden in the dishes. Also, Kamata said, ‘you can enjoy not only the presentation but also the taste. It’s not different to a normal cafe’, praising the quality of the lineup at Animate Cafe Nagoya.
Next up was a Q&A session where they were asked, ‘Why would you recommend Animate Cafe Nagoya to the 2D Club?’ Kamata answered, ‘I want them to enjoy the interior and also the food. It is a space where you can be carefree and enjoy yourself.’ She then said, ‘I want to have the next recruiting for the 2D Club at Animate Cafe!’
At the end of the exhibition, they left messages for those customers who will come to the newly reopened Animate Cafe Nagoya. Kamata said, ‘I would like you to have fun and immerse yourself in the atmosphere.’ Tsuzuki said, ‘I would like you to enjoy the feeling of entering the world of the anime and the excitement of being close to the characters’, and the event ended with a smile on their faces.
Animate Cafe Nagoya reopened on Tuesday 11 July 2017. There is the collaboration with the TV anime Katsugeki Touken Ranbu as well as many more collaborations to come. The fans are sure to enjoy it. Please pay a visit to the reborn Animate Cafe Nagoya.
