The popular anime series Hozuki’s Coolheadedness 2 (Hoozuki no Reitetsu 2) will air its second cour from 7 April 2018. The manga on which it is based has reached a circulation of over 11 million volumes and is currently running in Kodansha’s Weekly Morning Magazine.
Prior to the broadcast of the new cour, Hozuki’s Coolheadedness Special Event ~Ryogoku Jigoku Basho~ took place on Saturday 17 March at the famous sumo wrestling venue, the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.
The star-studded cast members, including Hiroki Yasumoto (Hozuki), Takashi Nagasako (King Enma), Yumiko Kobayashi (Shiro), Hiroki Goto (Kakisuke), Takashi Matsuyama (Rurio), Eri Kitamura (O-Ko), Atsumi Tanezaki (Mustard), Sumire Uesaka (Peach Maki), Koji Yusa (Hakutaku), Daisuke Hirakawa (Momotaro), and Ayaka Suwa (Miki) appeared on stage together with YOUR SONG IS GOOD, a Japanese ska band who produced and the backing of the theme song. Hiromichi Tezuka and Yoshiaki Hasegawa, both of whom voiced a variety of roles in the anime and who were wearing traditional burial clothes, facilitated the event along with Satomi Sato (Ichiko) and Yui Ogura (Niko), who together portray the reliable Zashiki-warashi twins.
The event kicked off with a big chorus of the opening theme song ‘Dai! Jigo Jigo Bushi’ by the Jigoku no Sata All Stars (Hell’s Affairs All Stars), which is made up of the anime’s cast members. The fans at the venue were lured into the world of Japanese Hell from the very start. All cast members called the title of the anime together, and then each of them greeted the fans and spoke of their enthusiasm for the new cour.
Subsequently, the concept of the event was announced. No wonder, it’s ‘jigoku’ (hell) indeed. There was a roulette-style wheel in the center of the stage and the topics of the stage talks were decided by the wheel randomly, therefore there was a possibility that one topic could be chosen repeatedly. It’d be hell for some of them! There were 10 topics written on the wheel including ‘Heaven’ for which the cast members would solve the problems of the fans, ‘YSIG’ for which the members of YOUR SONG IS GOOD would talk about what it was like creating the theme song, and ‘Battle’, which was to have a sumo battle between the Goldfish Plant and Kinkurin, the advertising manager from King Amusement Creative. The talks steadily followed the topics chosen by the wheel at the beginning.
As one of the cast members said, ‘The Power of Music is Great.’ The music played an important role throughout the event. It was not only YOUR SONG IS GOOD who performed, but Sumire Uesaka also held a mini live concert when the wheel landed on her nickname, ‘Sumire’. She sang ‘Caramel Momo Jam 120%’ and ‘Riverside Lovers (Naraku no Koi)’ and the fans were enchanted by her song and cute choreography. Kobayashi, Goto, and Matsuyama sang ‘Oni no Ko Miteita Jigoku Ezu ~Rinnette Iina~’ for the ‘Oni no Ko’ (Children of Oni) topic. Hirakawa joined the three to sing ‘Momotaro ~Oni in the Island~’ for the ‘Momotaro’ topic.
During the latter half of the event, the wheel was controlled mostly by the cast. For the ‘Celebration’ topic, the cast members celebrated Yasumoto’s birthday, which was the day before the event, by singing ‘Happy Birthday’ and bringing out a huge cake with a Hozuki illustration on it. At the final stage of the event, stickers saying ‘Run’ were stuck on every segment of the wheel, so that every time they spun, or even without spinning, the topic chosen was always ‘Run’. Hirakawa kept running on the treadmills on stage. The event ended with Hirakawa’s emotional goal as if he’d just finished a full marathon. (He was mimicking a famous charity TV program in Japan which always ends with a scene of marathon goal.)
After the emotional ending, calls for an encore resounded in the venue (as expected). The cast members performed the opening song for the first series ‘Jigoku no Sata wa Kimishidai’ for the encore. After the encore, it was time for the announcement of the newest information: the release of the ending theme song ‘Jigoku de Hot Cake’ sang by Sumire Uesaka was announced. A new game app project was also announced. Stay tuned for more details.
To wrap up the event, they presented the key visual for the second cour. Although some fans made fun of it saying it looked like a visual for a fisherman’s tale, most fans agreed that Hozuki looked very cool. Judging from the event, we can expect more fun and excitement from the new cour.
