A premiere event for the Spring 2019 anime Fairy Gone in Tokyo on 26 March 2019 screened the first two episodes of the series.
Fairy Gone is an original anime produced by Toho and P.A.WORKS. In the story there are humans called Fairy Soldiers, who can use fairies like a weapon. To become a Fairy Soldier, one has to be compatible to get a fairy organ transplanted. Every fairy has their own unique ability that the Fairy Soldiers can use at their will to fight the enemies. In the war that ended nine years ago, those Fairy Soldiers were an important force. Even after the war, they were forced into a new battle. The main character Mariya’s village was burned down during the war. Now she is looking for her childhood friend Veronica and lands in the group Dorothea, the Illegal Fairy Supervision Facility. There she meets Free, the commander of the troupe who became a Fairy Soldier during the war. The two of them stand at the center of the story.
The series is directed by Kenichi Suzuki (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Cells at Work), with series composition and script by Ao Jumonji (Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash). A manga adaptation of the anime will start serialization in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine from May 2019.
The first episode starts nine years prior to the main story, when the village of Mariya and Veronica goes up in flames. Mariya eventually falls into the hands of the Mafia as she wanders around and looks for Veronica. A certain incident happened during the dark auction, held by the Mafia. A mysterious female Fairy Soldier disturbs the auction and steals the exhibited fairy book. Mariya was positioned as security at the venue and Free was in the middle of an undercover investigation when the incident happened, so both of them try to catch the Fairy Soldier. As it turns out, the Fairy Soldier was Veronica. Veronica escapes and Free tells Mariya she can either be arrested for being an illegal fairy user or join Dorothea and work with him.
The second episode shows Mariya on her first assignment as part of Dorothea. She has to find an artificial fairy (which looks like a robot) and is involved in dark dealings. Meanwhile, Clara and Serge, other members of their unit, try to monitor a transaction. However, the person that appeared on site was Free’s former comrade in war, Wolfram. The two of them clash, knowing just too well how the other person fights.
In Japanese animation, if you talk about fairies you would usually expect small, spiritual beings that are cute and connected to nature. However, in this series the fairies can’t be seen by ordinary humans and their appearance is closer to a demon than a fairy. It seems as if their design is more inspired by legends and fairy tales with darker backgrounds. Ash Clad, the fairy of Mariya, has the ability to turn anything she grabs into ashes. It is inspired by ‘Cinderella’. Free’s fairy Red Hood attacks with claws and fangs. It is inspired by ‘Little Red Riding Hood’.
The most important characters have all made an appearance in these first two episodes. In the future we will learn more about the goals of Veronica and Wolfram who are fighting against Mariya and Free. Veronica was able to hand over the fairy book to someone, so the viewers can’t trust any character until they know who has the book. I am looking forward to seeing the development of the story as well as seeing what other fairy tales will be represented.
