MANGA.TOKYO readers, I’ve got some great news for you. Kadokawa Cinema Shinjuku has been renewed as an anime specialized cinema! Now you have one more place to visit when you are in Tokyo. I went to the press preview on 27 July 2018.
Kadokawa Cinema Shinjuku is, as its name suggests, situated in Shinjuku. It has been showing movies of every genre, including Japanese, foreign, live-action, and anime films. After the renewal, it will exclusively show animated movies and other things related to anime and games.
Screen 1 on the 4th floor preserved its 300 seats with the redesigned simple and modern entrance. Screen 2 on the 5th floor underwent the biggest change of all. It has transformed from a mini theater with 56 seats to an anime gallery where a special screening and talk show will take place. It has kept its movie projecting equipment and is suitable for an event with about 50 participants. Although no seats were placed at the press preview, there were several seats with power outlets at the counter in front of the screen.
Mamoru Hosoda Film Festival is taking place as the first event after the renewal at the anime specialized theater, Kadokawa Cinema Shinjuku. Between Saturday 28 July and Friday 24 August, his previous works, Digimon Adventure: Our War Game!, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, and The Boy and the Beast are being shown on screen. It’s a rare chance to watch these movies on the big screen!
The anime gallery on the 5th floor is used for an exhibition related to the movie showing on Screen 1. For the Mamoru Hosoda Film Festival, Mamoru Hosoda Film Works Gallery is being exhibited. Visitors can see exclusive items, such as reproductions of original pictures, the articles featured in monthly anime magazine Newtype when his works were released and signed, illustrated cards. The main visual of his latest movie Mirai is displayed at the entrance of the gallery. There is spot after the entrance where visitors can take commemorative photos.
Kadokawa Cinema Shinjuku is a must-visit place in Tokyo for anime fans. I have high expectations for its programs in the future.
