My Hero Academia joined AnimeJapan 2019 on 23 March for a special stage event during which they shared some exciting news and hosted a talk show with the anime’s main cast. Daiki Yamashita (Izuku ‘Deku’ Midoriya), Nobuhiko Okamoto (Katsuki Bakugo), Ayane Sakura (Ochaco Uraraka), Yuki Kaji (Shoto Todoroki) and Kaito Ishikawa (Tenya Iida) got on stage in front of hundreds of fans at Tokyo Big Site!
My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia) is a hugely popular manga by Kohei Horikoshi, which has been running in Sueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump since 2014. The first 3 seasons of the anime adaptation became a phenomenon around the world, and the fourth season of the anime will air in October 2019.
A New Project, Live Readings, and More
The cast went on stage and said hello to the audience. Yamashita expressed how happy he is that the fourth season of the anime is on the way. He feels that MHA is getting more and more exciting with each season!
The cast members then performed a live reading for the fans. The script included some of the most explosive and emotional scenes from the past two seasons and was specially arranged for the event. The scenes included Ochoco vs Bakugo and Deku vs Todoroki at the school sports festival, Iida’s feelings on the hero he wants to become after the fight against Stain, and the memorable fight of Deku vs Bakugo from Season 3. The live reading showcased the amazing skills of each cast member, as they perfectly expressed the complex and intense feelings of their characters. It almost felt as if the characters themselves were standing right in front of us.
Although Season 4 will air in Fall 2019, the fans were surprised with some very exciting news: My Hero Academia will be getting a second anime movie this winter! The news was announced in a short video on stage, and the cast members all expressed their shock and glee, with Yamashita shouting ‘a moviiiieee!!’. When an illustration by Horikoshi celebrating the news was shown on screen, both the cast members and audience let out a shout of happiness. Sakura was very excited at the news, but Ishikawa joked that they don’t even know if Ochaco and Iida will even appear yet. We have to wait until this winter to find out which characters will be in the movie and what they will get up to!

During the ending comments Kaji said it was rare for cast members and the audience to be surprised with news such as this at the same time. He is looking forward to My Hero Academia heating up even more with the fourth season and the newly announced movie. Ishikawa said that he feels the only reason the series has been able to continue for so long is thanks to the support of the fans. Sakura said that there was a lot she’s looking forward to, including the movie, the fourth series, and a fan event, and added that she hoped the fans would continue to support the work. Okamoto said that he enjoys reading the manga every Monday on Jump+, and that he’s always having to hold himself back from telling Yamashita just what Deku is getting up to. He’s also looking forward very much as a fan to seeing what will happen in the next movie’s original scenario. Yamashita said that he was surprised to hear the news for the second movie and that he can feel how great everybody’s expectations are. He also wondered at what point in the story the new movie would take place. He expressed his strong feelings of wanting to work hard with the staff members for the movie and encouraged anybody who may not be familiar with My Hero Academia to take this time as an opportunity to get to know the series.
Finally, the event ended with a staple of all My Hero Academia events! Yamashita shouted ‘Go beyond!’ and the audience responded with ‘Plus Ultra!’.
