Oasis Green started the 24 March 2019 program of AnimeJapan 2019 with the Dr. Stone stage event! It is the biggest stage of the four at AJ2019 and fans had to get up early to arrive in time. The guests were the voice actors of the anime: Yusuke Kobayashi (voice of Senku), Makoto Furukawa (voice of Taiju), Kana Ichinose (voice of Yuzuriha) and Yuichi Nakamura (voice of Tsukasa). Kobayashi was leading through the event.
The stage started at 9:30 in the morning and Nakamura mentioned that he has been up since 5:30 since he lives quite far away from the event venue. Ichinose topped it off by saying she has been up since 5 o’clock.
At first, they talked about the manga of Dr. Stone and that the preparations for this anime have been going on since the beginning of the year when Furukawa and Kobayashi appeared as a surprise guest at a Dr. Stone events. Now that Nakamura and Ichinose were announced as part of the cast, they could stand together on stage. The manga was voted the best shonen manga at the 64th Shogakukan Manga Awards. The manga has already so many fans and we can only expect that the anime will be as popular! At this point, Kobayashi switched topics and asked if there were any younger fans – elementary or middle school kids – at the venue and a few of them were actually there, so Nakamura joked that he will work his hardest only for them. Everybody started to laugh and said that it was a bit harsh for all the other fans.
After this opening, they showed the previously released Stone World version trailer on the big screen and talked a bit about the recording process for this series. Nakamura and Ichinose were cast roughly half a year ago. Ichinose worried a bit about her voice acting but was able to honestly play Yuzuriha. Kobayashi mentioned that this was actually the first time for them to meet and that when he heard her voice he thought it to be very good and soft. Ichinose went on to apologize for not being able to introduce herself earlier but Nakamura and Furukawa jumped in to the rescue and Nakamura started to talk about his audition. Apparently he hadn’t read much of the manga when he sent in his recording for the role of Tsukasa and just went with what he thought might feel right. He mentioned that the demo wasn’t as hard, since there is no movie to fit your voice to but when he stood in the studio to record for the trailer it was once more a challenge to find how to voice Tsukasa, as the way you record is different when you have moving images in front of you.
In the trailer, we also see Yuzuriha. Furukawa mentioned the headphones that Yuzuriha is wearing and Nakamura seemed a little confused, as he didn’t think they were headphones and thought they might have been some kind of body modifications because they are located right above her ears instead of over her ears or behind them. Furukawa said that this was Yuzuriha’s charm and that it looked good but Nakamura made a sound that showed he doubted it. While everybody was laughing about his reaction, he explained that he might just not get the cuteness of these headphones. While in the trailer Yuzuriha was wearing a school uniform and it made sense for her to wear headphones, he mentioned that even in the key visual where they are in the stone world and wearing different clothes, she was still wearing the now useless headphones. The cast proceeded to guess why she was wearing them. Maybe it was to calm down, because it’s part of her identity because Senku might have made them work again!
Next, they showed the second trailer called the Crafting Version, which has a completely different atmosphere compared to the Stone World trailer. If you have watched it, you will know: it shows the comedy side of the series. It shows Taiju screaming a lot as he helps Senku create different things that this new world is lacking. After the clip, Kobayashi asked Furukawa if his voice was all right because of all the screaming and that he was already getting tired just listening to it. Furukawa confirmed that it was hard work. When they thought of what else to say, Kobayashi chuckled and said that after Nakamura’s remarks about Yuzuriha’s headphones, he wasn’t able to pay attention to anything else but her head. Kobayashi noticed that only her headphones were a different color when she is a stone person, so they thought of reasons for that as well but couldn’t quite come to a conclusion.
Kobayashi also mentioned that the intonation of the names wasn’t really clear until they started recording. When he asked if the name ‘Senku’ was more like ‘SENku’ or ‘SenKU’ the staff couldn’t give them a clear answer but how we heard them talk in the trailer is how they decided the intonation of the names to be.
Another fun part of the event was when they talked about what they would do if they found themselves in the same situation as these characters. Furukawa said he would probably be useless and Kobayashi explained he would be the hunter but would end up being eaten by a lion. Nakamura wanted to be in charge of electronics and Ichinose said that since she can’t cook well she would try to go fishing to survive. When Nakamura asked her in a surprised tone if she knew how to fish, she denied it and said she thinks it is just something she would like to try. Everybody laughed at her cute remark.
Finally, the audience was introduced to Mecha Senku. It is a robot version of Senku that does videos on YouTube together with Kobayashi, where they try a variety of experiments. At first, Kobayashi mentioned that Mecha Senku wasn’t fully charged, but a staff member came on stage and showed that he was ready to go. Nakamura also mentioned that he saw him behind the stage fixing his hair in the mirror and getting ready to come out. So the audience was asked to call Mecha Senku out, and out he came!
The robot didn’t talk but his body language was funny as he reacted to everything the cast said, even when Kobayashi teased him. Kobayashi himself said that it was hard to work with him since he had to do double the talking and guess what was going on in his heart – or whatever a robot has there instead of a heart. Kobayashi interpreted the movements of Mecha Senku as he tried to tell everyone he had a video to show. The audience was shown a short trailer for the Youtube program, where Mecha Senku ran away from an explosion. The cast made fun of how small the explosion was and how scared Mecha Senku looked as he ran away. They also mentioned that his movements now and in the video seemed so different, but the cast quickly explained that it might be because he was fully charged now.
That was already the end of the stage event and every cast member shared some last words to the audience about their characters and how much they look forward to the start of the anime and hope that many people will watch and support Dr. Stone.
