Winter 2020 Anime: Official Info, Airdates & Trailers
Keep warm this winter season with the latest anime info at MANGA.TOKYO!
Another anime year is over! 2017 was full of great titles, but now we have a brand new year to be excited about. Winter 2018 might not seem as exciting as the rest of the seasons (with Tokyo Ghoul and Attack on Titan returning later this year) but it still has some amazing titles that will make the coming months totally worth it.
MANGA.TOKYO will be reviewing 13 anime for our trademark MANGA.TOKYO weekly reviews, the most interesting on the anime web, where instead of over-analyzing each frame and discussing the animation techniques, we focus on what matters: the fun of watching our favorite titles! We watch anime because we love them, and MANGA.TOKYO is here to leave out all the unnecessary jargon and talk about the scenes that made us laugh and cry, the characters that pleased and annoyed us, the stories that inspired us to do and be more.
This article has a list of our episodic anime review titles for Winter 2018, a few words about our writers, and an introduction to our articles to get a taste of what MANGA.TOKYO is all about! Couple that with our Anime Hashtags list, our Anime Info page, and our constant coverage of all the latest anime and otaku news, and you have everything you need for an amazing winter season!
Don’t forget to check our first impressions for all the new titles of the season:
Japanese Title: ブラッククローバー
Black Clover is one of the leftover anime from Fall 2017. The Jump series is going straight to its second cour.
The anime is an adaptation of the fantasy shounen manga series written and illustrated by Tabata Yuuki In a world where the use of magic is the norm, Asta dreams of becoming the Wizard King, the greatest mage of the land. There is one problem, however: He can’t use magic. The premise is not anything mind-blowing, but the trailer promises some exploding action scenes.
If you are still considering watching the series from the start, maybe our review of Episode 1 might be of help:
Japanese Title: 魔法使いの嫁 (Mahou Tsukai no Yome)
One of the (expected) hits of last season is going for a back-to-back cour in Winter 2018.
Chize is a girl who has lost all hope. Abandoned by her people and with her mother having committed suicide, she finds herself in a dire situation. Her only escape comes in the form of slavery; she sells herself to a magus known as The Child of Thorns to be his apprentice and bride to be.
Yamazaki Kore, the author of the original manga, is a lover of literature, and that shows in the anime. Many quotes and an English background make the series very magical indeed. The anime features some gorgeous art (you have to see the trailer below if you still haven’t) and mixes magic with myth lore to create a world to which we simply can’t resist.
Japanese Title: 3月のライオン 第2シリーズ (3-gatsu no Lion 2nd Season)
The second season of the shogi anime will go straight into Winter 2018 for a back-to-back cour. Rei Kiriyama will continue his shogi adventures with the full support of the Kawamoto sisters and the company of his friends and rivals.
If you need a reminder, check out our last review:
Japanese Title: citrus
Summary: Yuzu Aihara looks like your regular gal, but other than her looks would suggest, so far she hasn’t been in love. When she and her mother move houses, she also has to switch schools, and it has to be an all-girls school… The reason they move is that her mother got re-married and on top of all the changes, Yuzu is also gaining a sister in the whole process. Mei Aihara, the student council president at her new school, role model student and the same age as her. But then she catches her doing things that are not fit for a role model student…
If you have been following our reviews for NTR: Netsuzou Trap, then you are probably already excited about this yuri anime. citrus wants has a more serious approach to the genre with a more mature theme and plenty of drama that will satisfy fans of romantic stories. In other words, this is less Netsuzou Trap and more Kuzu no Honkai.
Japanese Title: 刻刻
Summary: It’s eternally 6:59… There has been a special technique passed on within the Yukawa family. If they use the technique, they can enter ‘Stasis’, a world of stopped time, and move around freely.
One day, the nephew and older brother of the protagonist Juri are kidnapped. To save them, the family uses their technique, but when they should be the only people able to move through the world, there appear other people who are also able to move. They are part of the ‘real love society’ and worship the technique of the Yukawa family. The mystery of stopping time and of the Yukawa family that surrounds the ‘stone’ that is needed to stop time will slowly be unfolded.
Newcomers Geno Studio are contributing to the scene with a lot of anime this year, but if there is one you need to keep under your radar, then it’s Moment by Moment. Just a read of the summary above is enough to guarantee a mystery plot that will probably have us scratching our heads.
Japanese Title: 学園ベビーシッターズ
Summary: Gakuen Babysitters is a heartfelt comedy story. Ryuichi and Kotaro lose their parents in a plane crash, and since Ryuichi is already in high school while Kotaro is still a toddler, he has to take care of him. As a condition of being able to stay together in a new home, Ryuichi has to work in a private nursery.
An anime about little babies has to be adorable. If nothing else, the title will shower us with an overload of cuteness. The shoujo manga it is based on is very popular and the series is one of the most anticipated of the season. Are you ready for this daycare mayhem?
Japanese Title: アイドリッシュセブン
Summary: Working at an agency, seven new idols await for the guidance of the main protagonist. They are all part of the idol unit called IDOLiSH7, and each of them has a unique personality. It is her task to manage them. In order to achieve the same goals, as manager and idols together, the main character gathers the seven ununified hearts and aim for the top.
If you love music and idols, then this is the show for you. This anime is based on a smartphone rhythm game by Goochs and distributed by Bandai Namco Online.
Japanese Title: ダーリン・イン・ザ・フランキス
Summary: They have a dream. One day, they want to fly in the sky. Even if they know that the sky is blocked by glass. In the distant future, the people moved to a city they built on the devastated earth, called Plantation. One residence facility they have built there is called Mistilteinn, also called ‘bird cage’. The children live there without knowing the outside world or what ‘the wide, free sky’ is. They are only taught how to fight. The enemy is a giant mysterious creature called Kyouryuu. To face this enemy they haven’t seen yet, the children ride robots called Franxx. They believe their existence is proved by riding them.
A lot of hype has been building up the previous months for this original anime co-production by two great anime studios. The premise is right up their alley since Trigger is made up of former Gainax member and we all know what Gainax is famous for: Evangelion. So we have children and mecha and a mystery written by Hayashi Naotaka, the original scenario writer for anime like Steins;Gate and CHAOS;HEAD.
Japanese Title: OVERLORD II
Summary: This is the second season of Overlord. It continues the story of Momonga, one of the strongest wizard of the MMORPG game Yggdrasil, who has found himself trapped into the game after its termination.
One of the most popular isekai anime adaptations out there, Overlord aired its first season in Summer 2015. Almost three years later, the second season wants to fill all the plot holes left in the first season and move on to more exciting stuff.
Japanese Title: ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン
Summary: It’s been a long time since the Auto Memories Doll was born. Dr. Orlando invented this machine for his blind wife Molly, who worked as a novelist so that she could write even though she couldn’t see. The machine looked like a small and cute doll. And because it was built because of his thoughts and wishes for his wife, he called it Auto Memories Doll. In the end, the Auto Memories Doll became popular and helped many people. It now refers to the women who work to write for those who can’t do it anymore or express feelings on behalf of others to someone. This story is about a young girl, Violet Evergarden, and how she connects people’s hearts as an Auto Memories Doll living at the turning point of a generation.
The source material, the light novel of the same novel by Akatsuki Kana, won the grand prize of the Kyoto Animation awards in 2014. This is a story about the power of words that has the quality stamp of one of the best animation studios out there. Just take a look at the PV below. This is going to be one beautiful anime.
Japanese Title: 伊藤潤二「コレクション」
Summary: The anime will adapt some stories of the Masterpiece Collection Vol.11 and Fragments of Horror book. It has not yet been revealed which stories will be covered. According to the key visual and promotional video following stories may be covered: Soichi’s Selfish Curse, Fashion Model, Slug Woman, Further Tales of Oshikiri, The Beautiful Boy of the Crossroads, and Tomie.
Junji Itou is one of the best horror manga authors the medium has to offer and the anime will try to capture that horror by imitating his art and tone. This is a must if you are a fan of Itou’s stories.
Japanese Title: 恋は雨上がりのように
Summary: She was the ace of the track club but stopped running after an incident: Akira Tachibana. She can’t express her feelings too well and is always misunderstood as being ‘cool’ by other people. She works part-time at a restaurant called ‘Garden’, where Masami Kondo has been the store manager for many years. Kondo is overwhelmed by the attention he gets from Akira, who overflows with feelings for him. Many will fondly remember this story after experiencing it, for it shows the many different ways rain can fall softly in a love story.
Judging from their ongoing anime, The Ancient Magus’ Bride, I am confident that WiT studio will give us a sweet anime, full of emotion. If you are a fan of classic romance anime, this is one of the top picks for the new season.
Japanese Title: 博多豚骨ラーメンズ
Summary: The story takes place in the ward of Hakata in Fukuoka, where it’s said 3% of the population are professional killers. With a cast of unique hired guns, we can take a look at the world of Fukuoka’s underground.
Political intrigue, murderers, and ramen? This is going to be an interesting anime that will bring on some really fun action.
