Hello, this is the anime and manga lover Mokugyo! One Piece is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. I’ve been reading the manga series from the beginning and I watch the anime series as well, but I didn’t realize that it’s already been 20 years. I never imagined it would last this long when it started!
Even after 20 years of serialization, there are many mysteries yet to be revealed. In this article, I’d like to talk about one of them, the mysterious island of Raftel. Raftel is supposed to be the last spot of their adventure, but what does that mean? Where is it located? What kind of island is it?
MINOR SPOILERS ALERT
This article only contains light One Piece spoilers, so it should be fine to read even if you have only read/seen part of One Piece. However, if you really hate spoilers of all kinds then proceed with caution!
Raftel, one of the mysteries foreshadowed in One Piece
Raftel is said to be the island at the end of the Grand Line. Roger the Pirate King and his crew are the only people we know to have seen the island, and it is treated like a legend. In One Piece, Crocus the lighthouse keeper is the first person who told Luffy and his friends about the island. He once worked as a doctor serving as part of Roger’s crew. It is said that Raftel is the end of their adventure and supposedly holds the Great Treasure of One Piece. As to what the treasure of One Piece itself is, check out my article summarizing some popular theories.
The world of One Piece is round like the Earth and one would imagine that they should somehow reach the end of Grand Line by a shortcut. However, it is said that they must travel from the starting point of the Grand Line to reach the end point. It is supposed to be extremely difficult to reach Raftel.
New facts revealed on Zou! Hints on how to reach Raftel!
When Luffy and his friends visited Zou, home to the Mink tribe, they learned new facts on how to reach Raftel. There are multiple poneglyphs in various locations in this world and they were created by Kozuki, the powerful daimyo family in Wano Country who were friends with the Mink tribe. Poneglyphs were created to safely record history by carving on indestructible stones.
The red poneglyphs are called ‘Road Poneglyphs’ and show you how to find the path to Raftel. There are four of these poneglyphs; connecting the four points indicated by them should reveal the location of Raftel. They found one of the red poneglyphs on Zou island, one is unknown, and the last two are each owned by two of the four pirate captains, Kaido and Big Mom.
Once they find and decipher all four red poneglyphs, they can reach Raftel. However, two are owned by other pirate captains and one’s location is unknown. It seems that it would take them another while to find all the Road Poneglyphs.
Is the last Road Poneglyph located in the Holy Land Mariejois?
The Straw Hat Pirates need to find all four Road Poneglyphs but the location of one of them is unknown. It is speculated that the last poneglyph might be located in the Holy Land of Mariejois where the Celestial Dragons live. It is on the Red Line and pirates cannot approach it. Doflamingo claims that the Holy Land of Mariejois holds a world-shaking treasure. It is possible that the treasure he speaks of is one of the Road Poneglyphs.
