Things can change a lot in ten years, so it is always exciting to take a look back and compare Seasons and the anime of the past. This time, let’s see what aired 10 years ago during the Summer 2008 anime season.
A magical power awakens within young girls. Humanity is been invaded by the grotesque beings called Neuro. To fight them off, they have developed leg mounted machines called ‘Strike Unit’ that can be worn by those with magical powers called ‘witches’ who then fly and fight the invaders. One of the witches is Yoshika Miyafuji, who is scouted for the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, where the best witch of each nation comes together to fight the enemy.
This work was born through concept art from Fumikane Shimada, who also would later work on Kantai Collection -Kancolle- and Girls und Panzer. At the time of the broadcast, the series used the famous line ‘They aren’t panties, so it’s not embarrassing!’ which still symbolizes Strike Witches to this day.
Self-proclaimed pretty genius mage Lina Inverse continues the journey to find an alternative weapon to substitute for the legendary Sword of Light that has been lost, together with her self-proclaimed guardian Gourry Gabriev. On their way, they meet their previous companions, Amelia and Zelgadis, in the kingdom of Luvinagard. However, they also meet Luvingard’s Inspector of the Special Investigative Unit, Wizer, who ends up arresting Lina.
This is the fourth season of the series and the first after Slayers Try, which aired 11 years earlier in 1997. It is based on the monumental light novel of the same title by Hajime Kanzaka and illustrated by Rui Araizumi. The series was directed by Takashi Watanabe with anime character designs by Naomi Miyata, who all also worked on the previous series. Even the familiar voices of Megumi Hayashibara as Lina and others returned for this original story of the series.
Minato has failed his university entrance exams for the second time when a mysterious girl called Musubi falls from the sky. She is one of the ’Sekirei’ and chooses Minato as her ‘Ashikabi’, her destined partner, which is why they have to fight and survive in a secret battle.
The series is based on a manga by Ashika Sakura. The voice actresses in this work include Saori Hayami as Musubi, who had just made her anime voice acting debut in the year before, as well as other names we still see a lot like Kana Hanazawa, Marina Inoue, and Aya Endo. These voice actresses also sang the opening theme titled ‘Sekirei’ for the anime, which became a hot topic among anime fans.
Takashi Natsume, who can see ayakashi (supernatural spirits), lost his parents at a young age, which is why he has been handed from one relative to the next. But one day, his life changes completely, when he inherits the ‘Book of Friends’ from his late grandmother Reiko, who was also able to see ayakashi. She collected the names of those she brought under her control and saved them in her book. Natsume and his self-proclaimed bodyguard Nyanko-sensei start on a quest to return the names of the ayakashi and with the experiences they gain, they also learn that there are important things to protect.
The anime is based on a shojo manga by Yuki Midorikawa and is currently being serialized in LaLa. The anime is very popular because of the warm story and the beautiful art, and also because of the great voice acting by Hiroshi Kamiya as Natsume and Kazuhiko Inoue as Nyanko-sensei. The popularity is still very obviously today, with the 6th season of the anime airing in 2017. In September 2018, Natsume’s Book of Friends: The Movie will start screening in Japanese cinemas.
The very ordinary male high school student Yuuto Ayase of Hakujo Academy is lucky enough to be the classmate of the beautiful and popular Haruka Nogizaka, who is not only graceful and elegant but also intelligent, has good character and has amazing hobbies like ikebana, tea ceremony, calligraphy, and more. Being such an impressive person, she gains a lot of attention from her schoolmates and could be considered the superstar of the school. However, one day, Yuuto has something to do in the library and discovers the secret of Haruka Nogizaka.
The series is based on a light novel series by Yusaku Igarashi and was serialized by Dengeki Bunko. The heroine Haruka is voiced by Mamiko Noto and the opening was sung by Hitomi Nabatame under the name ‘Miran Himemiya and Chocolate Rockers’. The story of Haruka and Yuuto was told until the very end through the second season Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu: Purezza and an OVA Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu: Finale.
Yuno got into the art department of Yamabuki High School and starts to live on her own in one of the apartments of ‘Hidamari-sou’ right in front of the school. There she lives with her classmate Miyako, a troublemaker who never seems to run out of energy; her nice, older classmate Hiro; and the boyish-looking and diligent Sae. The anime follows the close friendship of the girls and the things they experience at their new home.
Ume Aoki (known for the character designs for Puella Magi madoka Magica) is the creator of the original manga this series is based on. It is still being serialized in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara Carat. The x 365 marks the series as the second season. It was directed by Akiyuki Shonbo under Shaft and has been marked by him with his realistic tone and the unique screen tone. The opening written by Aki Hata called ‘? de Wasshoi’ is also very memorable.
Ryoko Yakushiji works for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police after graduating from Tokyo University’s Department of Law. She seems like a perfect woman who isn’t only beautiful but also very smart. However, her personality is something people have to get used to, which has gained her the nickname ‘Drayoke Oryo’, which is a play on the fact that people think even Dracula would avoid her. She and her subordinate Junichiro Izumida investigate a variety of strange incidents, which can’t be explained with logic.
The series is based on a light novel series by Tanaka Yoshiki who is known for writing the masterpiece Legend of the Galactic Heroes. This time, however, there are many unimaginable developments included and it even includes some romantic comedy elements.
