While anime is most of the time a blissfully unisex thing, it can’t be denied that there are series that appeal more to the ladies. And we don’t just mean Boys Love! For this reason, the female staff at MANGA.TOKYO have got together and created their own recommendations list for the anime starting this season! These are the series that our female staff are looking forward to, and are not representative of female otaku in general.
What are the series we are looking forward to the most and why? Read the following ranking!

10. A Centaur’s Life [Centaur no Nayami]
© 2017 KEI MURAYAMA/TOKUMA SHOTEN/Centaur’s Life Project
What seems like a cute little high school anime with mystical creatures instead of humans turns very real very fast when you hear that our main character is a centaur who has a complex because of her big body. While we might not watch it solely for that reason, it is the kind of worry most of us will feel at some point in our lives and the looks of the characters are a big part of why this series is so interesting. Dawn, one of our translators, says ‘I really love mythological creatures so seeing them in a Japanese high school setting sounds really interesting and cute!’ Their character designs look really cute and it is nice to see an anime take on creatures like angels, dragons, and satyrs. And don’t let us forget Sassass-chan, the snake-human our office ladies are looking forward to the most!
Our biggest argument here is: nice, muscular boys. Swimming. Half-naked. But don’t judge us too fast!
We also look forward to the touching story we expect to develop throughout the series. Japanese sports series are always about a team being strong, sticking together through the good and bad times and not giving up. It is motivating and touching and an easy watch. Editor Jennifer, who will watch anything with beautiful boys, says ‘It isn’t just the pretty boys! This anime has an amazing cast! Yuki Kaji, Takehiro Sakurai, Yuichi Nakamura… these are all voice actors I have
been in love with followed for years. Enjoy this anime with your eyes AND ears!’ But also, look at the key visual. Really. Muscular Japanese boys. Yummy.
8. In Another World With My Smartphone [Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni]
I told you to not judge us too fast. This anime promises to be a nice harem anime, having lots of cute girls in it. And we won’t say no to that either! While their names seem to be very strange, the synopsis already sounds amazing: God kills off someone by accident and sends him to live in another world. If that didn’t convince you yet, the artwork is really nice as we get to see a foreign world with a beautiful landscape. It seems like it will be fun to watch: the series includes magic, battles, and…a smartphone!
7. Vatican Miracle Examiner [Vatican Kiseki Chousakan]
© 2017 藤木稟･THORES 柴本／KADOKAWA／「バチカン奇跡調査官」製作委員会
While most of the anime up to this point have been light and colorful, this one we will watch for the story and the darkness around it. It always is interesting how Japan takes on western themes, especially if they are connected to religion, as Japan doesn’t tend to tackle the topic of religion all that often. Believe in who or what you want, as long as you don’t disturb the people around you. The rest of the world could learn from that… But aside from that, it sounds like an exciting detective story, a bit dark and mysterious. And did you take a look at the cast? Okamoto and Suwabe already had us convinced with their performance at AnimeJapan, posing like the characters they voice. While religious themes might not be everyone’s favorite, Vatican Miracle Examiner promises to be interesting- which is why we won’t miss out on this series!
6. Love and Lies [Koi to Uso]
The story of this series seems unique and interesting. It is one of the few romance series this season, which made it rank in our list naturally. The manga also seems interesting and while we don’t know how far this series will tell the story, it definitely is exciting to see Nejima, Misaki, and Lilina become animated characters. Cute girls are always a bonus and both Misaki and Lilina are cute in their own way. MANGA.TOKYO’s Naoko is looking forward to Love and Lies, saying ‘Getting a notification from the government as to who you should marry? It’s unbelievable! (;´Д｀) But I want to know what the boys and girls will end up doing in this society where romance is forbidden. I’m also looking forward to the alternate version in the live action movie that will be released this fall. (*´▽｀*)’
5. Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu
© Nitroplus・DMM GAMES/「活撃 刀剣乱舞」製作委員会
It’s about swords being cute guys! Do you really need another reason? Apart from the beautiful artwork and the basic storyline, there hasn’t been much information yet, so if we have a reason to look forward to this story it’s because of the cute boys in it. Add to that their traditional clothes and long hair and it’s reason enough to look forward to it. The nice sword action is a big bonus because just looking at boys is boring if they can’t impress you. Jennifer is a huge fan of Touken Ranbu -Online-, the game on which the anime is based. She recently went to a Touken Ranbu exhibition, so check it out to see how beautiful the characters are!
4. NTR: Netsuzou Trap
Aside from the very unrealistic way the girls’ boobs are drawn in the key visuals, we are looking forward to Netsuzou Trap a lot! No matter if the theme is boys’ love or girls’ love, we can only approve! Spread the love all around! The cute artwork is what got us interested in the series at the beginning. The storyline also sounds good, with boyfriends in the game when it is actually a yuri manga! Sounds exciting! If you are new to the genre of yuri, check out our Yuri Fair photo report. We want to see what this anime will turn into – and see if there are more unrealistically squished boobs.
3. Altair: A Record of Battles [Shoukoku no Altair]
A great fantasy title set in a country inspired by medieval Turkey. It promises to deliver interesting story with war and intrigues but also love, action, and friendship. The artwork is breathtaking and we are ready to jump into this adventure together with Mahmut and his beautiful falcon. Just the trailer looks dramatic enough to make us jump in joy. And did you listen to the music of the trailer? As if that weren’t reason enough, the cast of the series is amazing and the animation beautiful. Jennifer especially keeps shouting ‘Ayumu Murase! Ayumu Murase!’ We can’t wait to see the first episode!
2. Cleanliness Boy! Aoyama-kun [Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun]
We are still waiting on a full cast list for this one, but Martina and Jennifer are both fans of the manga and can tell you that it’s hilarious! So we have high expectations of Aoyama-kun. Aside from the highly unrealistic setting, it seems like a genius story to have a clean-freak play soccer with a burning passion. Although this is a sports anime like DIVE!!, this will be VERY different. Although there will be some muscular fan service for the girls as we saw in the trailer, we will be able to watch a bunch of boys being boys. We are looking forward to their sweat and quarrels, effort and exciting soccer matches! And we can be sure that Aoyama will be there to clean up any mess that might come their way.
1. Welcome to the Ballroom [Ballroom e Youkoso]
Sparkling ball gowns, men in suits, and good music. Great posture and flashy steps. The excitement of a dance tournament and rivals to battle. It’s a sports series, but not quite. And it promises to be amazing, as far as we can tell from the trailers. We already love how the characters have a normal profile and a dancer profile on the main characters section on the official homepage. Some of the characters look like totally different people in their ballroom garb. As all of our female staff members are looking forward to this series, this is our unquestioned number one anime that we are looking forward to this season. Our designer, Emi, is especially looking forward to it, and says ‘I’m really looking forward to the dance scenes! Director Itazu has played a part in works such as Dennou Coil and Joker Game, and he even has a seal of approval from the late anime director Satoshi Kon (Paprika; Tokyo Godfathers), whom I respect immensely. I’m looking forward to how Itazu will portray the sharp movements and sexiness that you can only find in that kind of dancing.’ We can’t fight against the attraction of a unique series like Welcome to the Ballroom.
Now that you know what our female staff recommend, what are the series that you are looking forward to the most? Do you agree with our ranking or completely disagree? We would love to hear your opinions!
