Winter 2020 Anime: Official Info, Airdates & Trailers
Keep warm this winter season with the latest anime info at MANGA.TOKYO!
How many times have you thought of escaping to another world, one with beautiful girls and magical powers and fantastical creatures? A world where you can be the hero and save it from the evil clutches of whatever is evil over there? We all daydream of such scenarios and it’s the reason why we like hero stories. But what if we could really transport to another world? That is the main theme of isekai (another world) anime, manga, and light novel stories that are all the rage lately.
The protagonist is usually taken from our present day life and thrust upon a weird world where he will usually have special powers and a harem of side characters to keep him company in his new adventures. Now imagine if one of those protagonists could also get his smartphone with him. That is exactly what happened to Mochizuki Touya, your typical Japanese teenager, who lost his life after God killed him on accident. To make up for his mistake, he takes him to a fantasy medieval world where he was allowed to bring his smartphone with him. Touya is now a technologically advanced overpowered main character in a fantasy setting, surrounded by beautiful girls.
But since you are here, I guess that you already know Touya’s story. If you want more adventures into strange worlds, here are 10 more anime that are in one way or another similar to In Another World With My Smartphone.
In Another World With My Smartphone was part of our weekly preview titles for Summer 2017. Check out all the preview galleries here.

Sent to another world by the intervention of a God? This was the first anime that came into my mind when thinking about titles similar to In Another World With My Smartphone. In Konosuba, Satou Kazuma, a NEET, tries to save someone in trouble but dies trying. The person he tried to save needed no saving, though. She is a goddess named Aqua who gives him a chance to ressurect if he can defeat the Demon Lord of another world. She also gives him the choice of one thing to take with him that can aid him in his quest. The mocking god, however, didn’t predict that the hurt Satou would choose the goddess herself!
Both main characters were sent to another world by a divine being and show their adventures into a new and strange world. Kazuma, however, retains his NEET personality and is less a hero than Touya is. Both shows are great comedies that will provide that necessary laugh.

Do you like isekai anime? Do you like robots? Do you like anime that treat robots like the coolest things in all worlds? Then this anime is for you. The protagonist is not the typical isekai protagonist. We don’t know if Ernesti, the little boy that loves mecha, has any knowledge that he is a Japanese mecha otaku transported on another world, but the isekai element is there. In this world, he finds himself empowered with magical powers and a great thirst to create the best robot that ever was!
Knight’s and Magic was part of our weekly anime reviews for Summer 2016. You can read our series review here:
Fall 2013
12 Episodes
Another relaxed adventure about a protagonist from our world that is thrown into another and meets MANY cute girls. Kanou Shinichi, an otaku, tries to recover from his broken heart (he was rejected by his childhood friend) by searching for jobs online. One job specifically asks for otaku and Shinichi jumps to the opportunity. After landing the job, he is transfered to another world where he needs to preach the otaku way of life. Who thought of this plot?
Yet, it is not the plot that makes this similar to In Another World With My Smartphone, but the harem and fantasy themes. Both comedies rely on many ecchi scenes and the characters use knowledge from our world to enthrall the inhabitants of the strange world they found themselves in.
Summer 2015

Isekai anime are a bit similar to stories like Sword Art Online, Log Horizon, and of course Overlord, where gamers are stuck inside virtual reality games. In Overlord, Momonga, a powerful wizard, loves the game Yggdrasil so much, that when they announce its closure, decides to spent the game’s last moments online. To his suprise, even after the servers should have closed down, he is still in character and the people of the virtual world seem alive!
Just like In Another World With My Smartphone, the protagonist finds himself in a different world, with the difference that in Overlord, the protagonist already knows the world. We also get a different point of view as Momonga is not your typical hero stuff.
Summer-Fall 2012
25 Episodes
In Sword Art Online, Kirito is trapped inside a Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) called Sword Art Online. Players cannot log out, and if they die in the game, they die in real life as well. The only way to escape this world is to defeat all 100 bosses of the game.
Sword Art Online is not a lighthearted comedy but it has many elements that are similar to In Another World With My Smartphone. Both protagonists are in some kind of another world and are also overpowered. There are some comedic moments in SAO and both series feature an extensive female supporting cast.
Season 1: Spring 2011
Season 2: Summer 2012
Season 3: Winter 2015
38 Episodes
In Dog Days, Izumi Cinque is a normal high school student who is transferred to a world full of kemonomimi (people with animal ears) to help them win wars. The difference is that in their world, wars are won through games. He decided to help his new friends while he searches for a way to return to Japan
Both anime are light-hearted and relaxing. Touya and Cinque use the knowledge from our world to help them in their new adventures and try to have fun as they do so.
Like Touya, Cinque is making the most out of an unexpected situation. They both encounter animal people in their new worlds, and both stand out amongst the inhabitants for their exceptional abilities. Both Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni and Dog Days have a light-hearted feel and bright, colorful style to them. Both shows feature main characters who are getting by and having fun while doing so.

In this fantasy comedy, Sistine is happy with her life the way it is, especially in the academy she is attending. She is studying magic with a tutor that knows his stuff. She didn’t account for the fact that she plays in an anime, and rarely things go well with these stories. Her favorite teacher retires and a substitute teacher takes over his classes. The new teacher is a lazy bastard and doesn’t plan on teaching them anything, which stands in the way of her life goal to find the sky castle.
This is not an isekai anime, but the cast of the two anime is similar, down to how they look and how they behave. The strong male protagonist is adept in powerful magic and is surrounded by an all-female support cast. See this, if you want a lighthearted fantasy anime.
Akashic Records of Bastard Magical Instructor was part of our episodic anime previews for Spring 2017. See all the anime screenshot galleries here.
Spring 2014

This is the isekai anime you need to see if you like video games. Sora and Shiro, hikikomori siblings who are legendary in the gaming world, find themselves in a world where games are a matter of life and death. A divine being called Tet has prohibited war and everything is decided by games. Sora and Shiro must help humanity regain more territory in this strange world.
A prequel anime movie called No Game No Life Zero was recently screened in Japan.
Fall 2014
12 Episodes
In Trinity Seven, Kasuga is thrust into his harem after enrolling into a Magic Academy in order to master his powers and save his childhood friend Hijiri.
Kasuga Arata is your typical harem protagonist and Trinity Seven has the same harem and ecchi comedy elements that In Another World With My Smartphone has. Both Touya and Arata are trying to harness the potential inside them and master their powers.
Spring-Summer 2016
25 Episodes
How could we complete this list without Re:ZERO, one of the most successful isekai anime? The protagonist, Natsuki Subaru, is just minding his own business doing some shopping when he is suddenly thrown into another world. I don’t know how these characters do it, but sometimes I wish I was one of these isekai protagonists. In this other world, he is saved by a beautiful girl called Emilia. He falls in love with her instantly and decides to help her in her quest to retrieve a stolen item. After being brutally murdered, he discovers that this new world came with a new ability that allows him to return to a previous point in time and change fate. Quite a useful ability.
Like most isekai protagonists, both Touya and Subaru are thrown into a new world. Unlike some of them, however, they are both driven by a sense of morality that drives their actions and keeps them going forward no matter the circumstances. They both have things to see through and they will do anything to protect the people around them.
These are just a few suggestions that are closer to Touya’s adventures in more than one themes. From the numerous girls and the absurd situations to the badass protagonist that will use his power to overcome all obstacles, these anime will definitely give you the same feel as In Another World With My Smartphone.
