A special talk show featuring Yuri!! on Ice’s original creator, screenwriter, and character designer Mitsurou Kubo and figure skating choreographer Kenji Miyamoto was held at Dance Cube Cafe in Tokyo on December 12. The two of them shared many anecdotes about the making of the anime.
Miyamoto said that he does not often get offers to work on anime and when he first received the request, he thought that it would be a ‘fantasy ice skating anime’ where the characters would produce whirlwinds when they spin. However, when he realized how enthusiastic Kubo and director Sayo Yamamoto were about producing a realistic work, he willingly accepted the offer.
In the talk about the show’s choreography, they talked about how they carried out a special training camp whereby they would rent out an ice rink once a week and practice from night until morning. They told us about how Miyamoto hurt his shoulder from the first day and how he told off the staff members for wearing jeans, telling them they would be too cold. It seems that they had a tough yet fun time together.
Furthermore, they gave us the inside story on the characters’ choreography. They talked about the Free Skating performance by Kazakhstan’s Otabek Altin that has yet to appear in the anime. Miyamoto was given a grand request to work on a theme called ’the Founding of a Nation’. This skating program will debut in the episodes covering the Grand Prix final.
After that, they spoke about the choreography performed by the main characters in the anime’s opening sequence. They explained that they combined the style of main character Yuri Katsuki and the Italian skater in the anime, Michele Crispino. They explained that the connection lies in the fact that the opening theme, History Maker, is in triple meter.
Miyamoto also told us that some foreign figure skaters have contacted him to tell him that they are watching the anime. Kubo let out a squeal of delight when she heard this.
The talk show also displayed a recreation of Yuri’s Free Skating outfit. The outfit is of such high quality that it could be used for a real performance. The inner part is made from a translucent material that gives the outfit a sexy edge. Kubo commented, ‘Someday I’d like to do a costume exhibition. The outfits and choreography are all original, so each of them have their own special meaning. I’m confident that we could display them!’
