It has been announced that there will be a Hollywood live action adaptation of Makoto Shinkai’s anime movie Your Name (Kimi no Na wa). Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot Productions will work together on the live action adaptation.
Your Name was released in Japan on 26 August 2016 and became one of the most successful anime movies with a box office revenue of more than 25 billion yen. Popular in Japan and across the globe, Your name set up a new record for Japanese movies in South Korea, China, Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The DVD was released in Japan on 26 July 2017.
The rights for the live action adaptation have been acquired by Paramount Pictures and J.J.Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions. J.J.Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce the movie and Eric Heisserer (nominated for best screenplay during the Academy Awards 2017 for Arrival) will write the screenplay. Furthermore, Genki Kawamura, who worked as a producer for the anime, will help out with the live action adaptation as well.
Makoto Shinkai said about the Hollywood remake, ‘Your Name is a movie made with many local images and domestic technology. Making this kind of production into a Hollywood movie might show me a whole lot of new possibilities. I have high expectations and am looking forward to it!’ Producer Kawamura also left a positive message.
The staff or release date of the Hollywood version hasn’t been revealed yet but expectations are already high.
This feels like a dream. I couldn’t believe it when I heard that J.J.Abrams wanted to remake Your Name into a Hollywood movie. When I met him at Bad Robot, I still thought, ‘It’s a dream, this has to be a dream’, but apparently it is reality. J.J.Abrams has remade many masterpieces with a modern spin to them. I think nobody else could make the Your Name Hollywood remake as well as J.J.Abrams and his team. The screenplay by Eric Heisserer for Arrival had moved me (I have been watching science fiction for years) the most. I am confident that Heisserer will write the climax of the story, where science fiction meets romance, in the best way possible. I want to produce a Hollywood production of Your Name together with Abrams and Heisserer that I can be proud of.
I am looking forward to this opportunity to create a remake of Japan’s successful movie Your Name together with some of Hollywood’s best creators. Our company has created a special team that is set on creating Japanese intellectual property together with companies overseas, so we want to increase projects like this in the future.
