The popular children’s book series Waka Okami wa Shougakusei (The Young Innkeeper is an Elementary Schooler), published under Kodansha’s children book publisher Aoi Tori Bunko, has released a trailer for its anime movie which will follow the soon-to-air anime TV series. There is also a live action movie based on the series in the works. The new movie will be directed by Kitaro Kosaka, who is known for Nasu: Summer in Andalusia and is working on various Ghibli movies. The screenplay will be written by Reiko Yoshida (A Silent Voice, Violet Evergarden).
Waka Okami wa Shougakusei tells the story of a young girl in the sixth grade of elementary school, who suddenly loses her parents in an accident and starts living at the Japanese inn Haru no Ya, which her grandmother owns. She lives together with the ghost Uribou who saved her and she helps the customers that come to the inn with their struggles. The anime movie will tell a story with her parents, who haven’t been shown in the TV anime or the original books so far.
Hiroko Reijo, the original author of the novel series talked about the movie, ‘I will never forget the great impact I felt when director Kosaka showed me the storyboard for Hana no Yu Onsen. It was like he had taken the picture out of my had and projected it exactly like I had imagined it. I am so deeply thankful that he is able to project the things I wanted to relay to the readers of the books so wonderfully realistically, beautifully and warmly with these pictures. Those who read the story when they were children, as well as children who come to watch it for the first time and haven’t met Uribou or Oriko-chan yet, will laugh and cry and feel their heart warm up with this work.’
The voice actors from the TV anime will keep working with the anime movie. Oriko will be voiced by Seiran Kobayashi, the ghost Uribou will be voiced by Satsumi Matsuda, and Oriko’s rival, Matsuki Akino, will be voiced by Nana Mizuki.
In Japanese cinemas from September 2018
