Riki Taoka’s Wagahai no heya de Aru will get live action adaptation. It will start airing on 19 September 2017.
The manga is currently being serialized in Shogakukan’s Gessan and revolves around university student Kagiyama Tetsuro who lives alone. In his one-room apartment, he deals with problems like ‘Where does dust come from?’ or ‘What to do with milk you bought by mistake?’ making the series a philosophic comedy. And his furniture also puts in a word or two. On 12 September 2017, the 5th volume of the manga will be released.
When the talks about turning the manga into a TV series started, Taoka thought about ending the manga in about 2 more volumes. ‘I thought I heard wrong or that this was some kind of hidden camera prank when I first heard that they want to make a TV series. Can it be true?’ His editor in charge also said, ‘I’m also not sure if I can believe it.’
Fans can look forward to further announcements of the cast.
Comment from Riki Taoka
I thought I heard wrong or that this was some kind of hidden camera prank when I first heard that they want to make a TV series. Until last month, we had only talked about how to end the series and suddenly there is a dorama? Maybe they said Begirama (note: a character from Dragon Quest, sounds a bit like the word dorama)? I thought but no, they really said dorama. One thing came after the other and now I am sitting here, writing this comment. But I am a cautious person and still can’t quite trust it. But as I think it would be quite meaningless to use me for a hidden camera prank, it might be true that my series gets turned into a TV series. Can it be true?’
Comment from the editor in charge
When I told Taoka-sensei he could resume with the series and that it would be turned into a TV series, he had a very realistic reaction, saying ‘Oh, then I won’t be unemployed at the end of the year.’ But still, as the editor in charge I’m also not sure if I can believe it. Are they for real?
Comment from Eriko Mikami (Producer)
I approached Taoka-sensei very seriously with my intention of turning his work into a TV series, but… His reaction was ‘Are you serious?’ and even when we told the editorial department at Gessan, they were surprised. Even after casting the characters, I felt like they were still not believing it. I want to make a series that uses the stupidity of the main character and the fun the furniture make of him. Still… Everything is good. I think. I am not kidding. The TV series is real.
