The midnight-slot anime Kemono Friends started airing in January 2017. It started out as a smartphone game in 2015 and it evolved into a manga in Monthly Shounen Ace (Kadokawa) before the TV anime adaptation.
The anime takes place at a massive zoo called Japari Park where there are various anthropomorphic animal girls called ‘Friends’. The story features a lost girl named Kaban-chan heading to the park’s library with another girl named Serval-chan to discover what kind of animals they are.
When the very first episode aired, the anime was criticised for its strange and childish images. However, after five episodes, the anime became really popular and the unique way the animal girls talk became its defining feature. A lot of people started copying on Twitter how the girls talk. The ‘Kemono Friends phenomenon’ is a reality!
The people who copythe way the girls talk seem to enjoy using their cheesy childish phrases which include ‘Whaai!,’ ‘Sugoi!(amazing),’ ‘Kimi wa ~ no friends nandane! (You are a ~’s friend),’ ‘Tanoshii! (fun)’ and ‘Omoshiroi! (funny).’ Just what happened exactly in those five episodes!?
It’s most likely that people didn’t expect much from this ‘CG Moe Character Anime’ in the beginning. To be honest, the writer of the anime felt the same. A lot of people might have thought about dropping the anime because the characters’ boring dialogues, and even Kaban-chan’s adventure was moving very slowly.
However, a robot named Lucky Beast, known as ‘Boss’ to his friends and a guide in Japari Park, appeared at the end of the first episode. Lucky Beast is very cute and looks like a cat with the legs of a raccoon dog. He found Kaban-chan and spoke to her immediately, saying ‘Nice to meet you, I am Lucky Beast!’ with his mechanical voice. Serval-chan, on the other hand, was blown away seeing Lucky Beast speak. ‘He spoke!’ she says as that seemed to be the first time she heard him speak.
Lucky Beast kept speaking to Kaban-chan in the second episode, asking her ‘What is your name?’ and ‘What do you want to see?’ Although Serval-chan was right next to Kaban-chan, Lucky Beast didn’t even look at her. Once Kaban-chan fell asleep, Lucky Beast completely stopped speaking and moving as if he had stopped thinking. Even though Serval-chan tried to talk to him, he just kept staring into space.
Anime fans seem to have sensed something interesting from his actions. The fans think that he is probably the type to ignore people and make them anxious. He has a somewhat dark nature. That darker side comes out from time to time, even though the characters are cute and the story takes place in Japari Park, a peaceful place. Furthermore, a broken bridge on top of a river and a rusty bus with no seats can be seen in the anime, showing that Japari Park is no longer in good shape.
Regardless, the friends continue having fun in the park. This mysterious and superb mismatched concept captivates the audience and draws in their desire to solve the mysteries of the anime. The writer of this article was also fascinated with this unique CG anime story.
Before Episode 5 was broadcast, the condition of Japari Park had been drawn and described in many ways. Kemono Friends slowly but surely attracts more audience. Kemono Friends is also trending on Twitter, and the SHARP Official Twitter is posting in the Friends’ way of speaking: Tanoshii!
How will the story turn out next? Which direction will the story take? Here’s to an incredible anime, Kemono Friends….!
