It may seem unusual holding a film festival at an international airport, but New Chitose Airport International Animation Festival is in the spotlight for its authenticity. It was held for the first time in 2014, followed by a great success in 2015, which led to the opening of the third festival in 2016.
The festival opens for 4 days from November 3rd until November 6th. High quality animations from all over the world will gather up at New Chitose Airport again. Entries have recently opened for the competitions.
The festival hosts Japan-exclusive film screening of the masterpieces from overseas. In 2015, well-known animation writers, such as Adam Elliot and Chang Hyung-Yun, also visited there. It received 1103 applications from 59 different countries for the competition of animated short films.
Two directors Tom Brown and Daniel Gray won the award for the Grand Prix for their animated short film, ‘Teeth’. The total number of the visitors was amazing 33000.
One of the main events of this festival is the competition of animated short films. Entry conditions for this are that submitted films must be newer than 2014 and the run time must be within 30 mins. The entries are open between April 15th and June 30th. There are three categories; International Competition, Japan Competition and Music Animation Competition.
After the judgment, winning films will be announced on November 6th, followed by an award ceremony. The winner of the Grand Prix will receive ¥1.000.000. A panel of judges is to be announced later on.
