The screening of the movie Teiichi no Kuni, based on Usamaru Furuya’s manga of the same name, took place on 17 May 2017 at Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills. Guests on stage were Masaki Suda (Teiichi Akaba), Shuhei Nomura (Kikuma Togo), Ryoma Takeuchi (Dan Otaka), Shotaro Mamiya (Roland Himuro), and Jun Shison (Komei Sakakibara).
During this screening, it was allowed to cheer, wear a cosplay, and bring glow sticks. Before the movie started, an announcement by Suda could be heard, explaining that 8 fast claps are the ‘Kaitei-style applause’ and taught everybody the school song. ‘Throw away all feelings of embarrassment! Let yourself loose,’ Suda said at last and the movie started. When the Toho logo came on, the audience exclaimed, ‘Toho! We have been waiting!’
When the movie started and the characters appeared, the audience called out the name of each character. When Suda as Teiichi and Shison as Komei start their flirting on screen, the audience screamed in excitement. When Teiichi announces his score from the entrance exam to his father, the fans called out the names of the subject together with him, going ‘Social Studies!’ and ‘Science!’ And when he realizes his score is not up to par with his rivals, they encouraged him with, ‘It’s fine! Have confidence!’ and ‘There is always next time! Stay strong!’ In one scene, Roland asks, ‘You are my friend, right?’ and the audience answered in sync with the movie, ‘We’re friends!’
After the movie, the five actors came on stage. Suda and Nomura asked the audience ‘Are you excited!?’ Suda revealed to the audience that he went to see one of the screenings on the 15th in private. ‘It’s the first time in my life I went to see a movie with myself in the cinema,’ he said. It was also revealed that original creator Usamaru Furuya went to the screening with him. Sude told the audience that the Furuya-san liked the movie as well.
At this point, the actors were asked, ‘If you were at a screening like today, what would you say during the movie?’ Nomura answered fast, imitating the movement of hissing a flag and said, ‘I would sing the school hymn and hiss the flag with them.’ Takeuchi said, ‘I want to dance while singing tralalalalala!’ and promptly started moving as if he was a doll. He referred to a scene in which Teiichi plays ‘Marionette’ on the piano. Shison said, ‘Komei might surprise some of the people at first, but I think it would be great to say “Komei Sakakibara nyan~” with everyone together.’ Nomura instantly teased him, ‘Not with everyone, depending on how you do it!’ and Shison answered, ‘Okay, then I will say “Yorochikubi!” and pop out a nipple!,’ while mimicking Kikuma and a groan went through the audience.
As this was the last time for them to be at a screening, they held a ‘graduation ceremony’, where the four co-stars sent Suda a message. First, Takeuchi went to face Suda and suddenly Nomura became a priest and asked them, ‘Your vows, please!’ Takeuchi then gave Suda his message, ‘I will give my best so that we will be able to heat up the Japanese movie world together again, no matter how long it takes! I love you!’ and Shison said his thanks to him with, ‘Together with Suda-kun came the making of Komei.’
From Mamiya came the message, ‘Teiichi Akaba for president. The president of actors in our generation is you, Masaki Suda. I think you are the leader of our generation.’ Nomura then pretended to cry in that touching atmosphere and said, ‘Stop it, I can’t say anything!’ which made the audience laugh. Then he continued, ‘I will not lose to anybody and always aim for a higher place. Please also take care of us during the sequel! … … … Wait, do you want to show a scene that didn’t make it in?’ and then he suddenly turned and kissed Suda. And as soon as the kiss happened, the audience let out a screech of delight.
In the end Suda talked about someone from the main cast that couldn’t attend the event, Jiji – Yudai Chiba -. ‘Except for Chiba, who is on the verge of death (laugh)…’ He continued with a serious expression, ‘I hope in 10 years or 20 years we can come together and make something interesting in Japan again.’ Then the cast joked around, saying ‘Is Jiji okay?’ ‘How old was he again, 72?’ and ‘If he is still alive then…’
