The MANGA.TOKYO staff had its share of summer. Now, all we wish is for the hot and humid weather to go away and give its place to the red and cool autumn.
Sword Art Online has been continuously published in Kadokawa/ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Bunko since April 2009. The first volume of the light novel series, Sword Art Online 1: Aincrad, has over a million copies in circulation, including reprints. The global cumulative publication total has surpassed 20 million.
Sword Art Online was written by Reki Kawahara, who won the grand prize in the Novel section of the 15th Dengeki Grand Prize, Japan’s largest public newcomers awards ceremony. The work tells the story of the main character, Kirito, set in a next generation online game called ‘Sword Art Online.’ The story became very popular not only in Japan but also overseas. The novel series has 23 published volumes, a two-season anime adaptation, and a video game title. Manga, original goods, and a spin-off novel have also been published. A Sword Art Online movie, with a brand new story written by Mr. Kawahara, is currently playing in theaters worldwide. There are also plans for a live action adaptation in Hollywood.
In celebration of the 1 million copies, it has been decided that from the end of April, further shipments of Sword Art Online 1: Aincrad will be distributed with a new cover. The words ‘First in Dengeki Bunko’s History!!’ will be written on the cover, featuring a design that will make you want to reach out and take the volume!
