Usually, we do not get confronted with dying lines or last words in real life, but as characters die in anime series, they often say some memorable lines right before they pass away. Some of these words and phrases fill fans’ hearts and stay memorable. Of course, this article contains huge spoilers for many series, Mobile Suit Gundam and Weekly Shonen Jump works in particular.
Our friends over at Anime! Anime! asked their readers, ‘Which anime character’s dying lines are the most famous?’ The questionnaire was open from 12 to 14 April 2018 and 245 people answered. About 68% were male and 32% were female users. 50% of the participants were 19 years or younger and about 30% were in their twenties.
Orga Itsuka from Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans topped the results.
In the first place came Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans‘s Orga Itsuka with his ‘Tomarun janee zo’ which means ‘Don’t stop’. He received a total of 21% of the votes. Orga is the leader of the Tekkaden, a militia made from child soldiers. The last words he left his group members strengthened the intentions of main character Mikazuki Augus and others.
Lockon Stratos’ final words from Mobile Suit Gundam 00 ranked in 5th place, Mobile Suit Gundam‘s Garma Zabi and M’Quve, as well as Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ’s Mashymre Cello, have been voted into joint 13th place.
In second place came One Piece‘s Portgas D. Ace and his ‘Aishitekurete, arigatou!’ (lit. Thank you for loving me!’). He got a total of 18% of the votes. Ace is Luffy’s older brother and one of the most popular characters in One Piece.
The moment where he uses his final breath to thank Luffy and the others made many fans cry.
In third place is Fist of the North Star‘s Raoh and his ‘Waga shougai ni ippen no kui nashi!!’ (lit. Not one ounce of regret in thy life!!). This tough phrase received the love of 5% of the voters. Raoh is the eldest son of four honorary brothers. These final words are well-known even outside the fandom. Sixth place went to the unique ‘Hidebu!!’ shout, which is famously said by Heart, also from Fist of the North Star.
The top 10 is filled with One Piece, Naruto, Fist of the North Star, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Gintama, which means that Shonen Jump‘s popular series stand out in particular. It seems that these phrases are a necessary part of action manga.
Furthermore, Space Battleship Yamato and Mobile Suit Gundam are old masterpieces that have impressive lines that are still well known.
