Keep warm this winter season with the latest anime info at MANGA.TOKYO!
It is already November and we are more or less halfway through the season. Over 50 anime series are being broadcasted this season, and our colleagues from Anime! Anime! wondered which titles people in Japan were watching the most. So they asked their readers! From 5-8 November 2017, they held a survey, answered by 1412 of their readers. 60% of them were male, 40% were female. Most of the participants were young, with 35% below 19, 25% in their 20s, 15% in their 30s and 15% in their 40s. Let’s see what anime the younger people in Japan are watching!
Ranked in first place is The Ancient Magus’ Bride. It got votes from over 50% of the viewers, which means half of the participants are watching the series. The series is based on a manga by Kore Yamazaki and is currently being serialized in the Monthly Comic Garden. The 15-year-old Chise Hatori and the magus Elias are the center of their story, and over 4.5 million copies of the series have been sold so far. The anime is produced by WIT Studio, who are also known for producing Attack on Titan and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. The popularity of this series was already anticipated by the studio, as the OVA that was produced before the start of the TV anime was of high quality.
Himouto Umaru-chan R ranked second with 42% of the votes. Over 50% of the male participants voted for the series, which is also first place in the male-ranking. The series is based on a popular comedy manga serialized in the Weekly Young Jump. Umaru-chan is a beautiful high school student when at school but as soon as she comes home, she turns into a lazy rat. The series became popular because of its daring concept of changing the body proportions of Umaru depending on the life situation the main character is in. The manga just ended recently, but we are still looking forward to seeing how the anime will end.
Kino’s Journey ranked third. After 14 years, the Dengeki Bunko Novel is back with a new anime. 39% of the participants voted for this series and was very popular with people in their 30s, where 45% voted for the series. It seems that people who watched the anime 14 years ago were looking forward to this new adaptation!
Ranking fourth is Blend S. The series missed the top three by only three votes.
This season is full of series that are either a second season or the continuation of some other sorts of a series. The Ancient Magus’ Bride released an OVA before the series and Himouto is also the second season of a manga series that just ended. Even Kino’s Journey is a returning story.
Just before the year ends, Anime! Anime! will hold their end-of-season survey and ask which series they enjoyed most.
