About the cast, Oshii said, ‘I would like to watch Scarlet Johansson until the end. She became the character far more than I could have imagined. There is no doubt, this is the most gorgeous work of Ghost in the Shell so far.’ Talking a bit more about her character and her conflicting emotions because her heart and body aren’t one, he said, ‘The Major is fierce. One side of her is like a war-hero, but then on the other side she is also tormented by insecurities. She is neither a full robot, nor a full human. Scarlett was able to let the viewer see that. She is very close to the character I created. I wonder if this character was made for her to play and if somebody else could have pulled it off.’
