On 7 March 2017, a premiere screening for Sagrada Reset (Sakurada Reset), which will start airing from 5 April 2017, was held at Shinjuku Wald 9 in Tokyo. Sagrada Reset is based on the debut novel of Yutaka Kono, best known for his novel series Kaidantou.
In the story, Sakurada is a town where half of the people have special abilities. The residents live there peacefully due to the surveillance of those with special abilities carried out by The Administration Bureau. Kei Asai has the power to remember everything he has ever seen or heard, while Misora Haruki can reset the world to a point of up to three days earlier. Those two try to change the world by going back in time and prevent sad events that occurred in the past. It’s a pleasant, youthful sci-fi story.
The director is Kawatsura Shinya, known for Non Non Biyori and Yamada-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge. david production, who also had a hand in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, worked on production. Two live action movie adaptations of Sagrada Reset will be released in March and May.
‘There is gentleness and purity in being mild.’
On the day of the advanced screening event, Kaito Ishikawa (as Kei Asai), Kana Hanazawa (as Misora Haruki), Aoi Yuki (as Sumire Souma), and Director Kawatsura went up on the stage as guests. Hisanori Yoshida, announcer at Nippon Broadcasting System, was the host.
When Ishikawa appeared on stage, a male fan was clearly heard shouting, “Ishikawa pro!”. After that, the cheering for Hanazawa and Aoi, who are very popular with male fans, got louder but the support of the male fans properly reached Ishikawa.
Ishikawa said that the character he is voicing is quite mild, and therefore it is hard to see his emotions. He voiced him while thinking of a senpai who speaks like that. When he mentioned that the sempai in question was someone who likes shogi, Yoshida instantly said that he could guess who Ishikawa was talking about. Ishikawa laughed and confirmed that he was talking about Nobuhiko Okamoto.
Hanazawa talked about her character Haruki, who she described as a bit of a robotic girl. She said that in middle school and high school her character is a bit different. Hanazawa remarked that it was fun to think about how she should express her. Aoi, the voice of Sumire Souma who is an important person for both Kei and Haruki, said that Souma is a smart child who has many abstract lines. She told us that at the audition the staff told Aoi that Souma is a cat-like person, causing Aoi to think a lot about how ‘I should could make her sound that way.’
The original story ends with the 7th volume, which comes out soon. Kawatsura, who plans to complete the story over two anime seasons, said that when he heard the story he thought that this would be a great responsibility and that he has to work on this properly. He also said this anime seems to highlight how pure people are, ‘It’s an exciting anime.’
Changing the narrative to make it easier to understand
At the premiere, the first two episodes were shown. Yoshida explained that it the episodes were a little different to the original story and that’s why they consider them as the Episode 0. He warned everyone not to post about the episodes on social media as it would be classed as spoilers.
Since he said that, we have to keep the rest of the screening a secret. But it is as the director said: the characters’ words and the story just flow gently. However, there were many emotions. The anime carries a mysterious charm and promises excitement!
