Saga Prefecture has been riding the anime train for the past few years, and with the success of Yuri!!! on ICE, they seem intent in speeding up! As we have previously reported, Saga Prefecture is producing two original anime, and recently made a collaboration with Yuri!!! on ICE called ‘Saga on Ice’!
Yuri on ICE: Saga Prefecture to Launch Revitalization Project
This is not the first time that a prefecture has collaborated with an anime. In 2015 there have been many collaborations with different prefectures as a main feature. In 2016 the two stories Yakusoku no Utsuwa; Arita no Hatsukoi (story set in Arita) and Fuyu no Chikai, Natsu no Matsuri: Takeo no Ookusu (set in Takeo) were released as a part of a collaboration with Saga Prefecture and gained a lot of popularity. Following their predecessors’ success, here come their two new anime ventures Okaeri (set in Karatsu) and Tadaima (set in Saga city).
In Tadaima (I’m Home), Kaori Nazuka will play the main character Mei and Kotono Mitsuishi will play her mother, Jun. In Okaeri (Welcome Home), Kappei Yamaguchi will play Sora Hiroi, and Ai Nonaka will play Ami Yoshioka. Both of these anime show the beautiful landscape of Saga prefecture and have a touching story.
Kotono Mitsuishi (Jun in ‘Tadaima’)
‘When I read the script I was shocked. This time I play a mother! The scene where they grant Jun’s wish with the hot air balloon brought me to tears. In the Karatsu Arc I am a single mother who raised Sora alone. I am not sure if I was able to properly deliver the Saga dialect, but I am sure I 120% portrayed the feelings of a mother who thinks of her kid. But playing Kappei-san’s mother was still a shock (laugh).’
Kappei Yamaguchi (Sora Hiroi in ‘Okaeri’)
‘I am voicing a boy from Karatsu. While playing this character, I thought of the time when I moved to Tokyo.’
‘Okaeri’ and ‘Tadaima’ Anime Release Event
To celebrate the anniversary of the series, a public release event will be held on 11 March 2017 at the Saga Prefectural Art Museum. At the event will be the screenwriter for both works, Hideki Sonoda (born in Saga prefecture), and the voice of the main character of the Karatsu Arc, Kappei Yamaguchi. Furthermore, the artist of the ending song for the Karatsu Arc is Sayaka Matsuya and she will hold a live performance of the ending song Taisetsu na Basho.
We are curious to see how beneficial will these anime be to the economic revitalization of the area. Otaku fans are known for their anime pilgrimages. If you want to read more about the real places that appear in anime, don’t forget to check our Otaku Travel articles!
