G-Mix, a character-goods brand based in Tokyo, wants to promote STEM studies in Japan, and in particular physics, through a new project that takes particles and turns them into beautiful anime boys. Five such particles have already been designed by Minato Yaguchi, with more to follow in the future.
The project will promote science studies through merchandise featuring the boys and a 4-koma manga on Twitter. The manga will have a science theme and will tell the story of young scientists who come to Japan from all around the world.
The characters of Particle Boys: Up Quark, Down Quark, Higgs Bozon, Gluon Adler, Elec Smith
It’s not uncommon for anime to be used as a way to promote causes outside the industry. Recent series Sakura Quest and Action Heroine Cheer Fruits describe how rural municipalities use the medium to promote tourism, humanitarian causes, and even political campaigns.
Particle Boys is trying to bring the world of physics to more young people and persuade them that a career in science is a viable and interesting career path.
