Osamu Akimoto has been awarded the Geijutsu Senshou Award by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs (MEXT) in the ‘Media Art’ category.
His manga Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kouen-mae Hashutsujo (Kochikame for short) was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump for 40 years, never missing an issue or having to take a break. The manga was completed with the release of its 200th volume. The award was awarded because ‘his work is incomparable to any other, enhancing the significance and value of manga as a cultural item.”
The Geijutsu Senshou is an art award that is given to creators who have achieved something outstanding or whose work opened the door to a new kind of art. There is also the Geijutsu Senshou Monbu Kagaku Daijin (MEXT Minister’s Art Award) as well as the Newcomers’ Award.
