The TV anime series Nil Admirari no Tenbin (Libra of Nil Admirari), based on the romantic adventure game Nil Admirari no Tenbin: Teito Genwaku Ki by Otomate, aired in Spring 2018. The anime held a special event titled ‘Momiji Mau Teito no Aki’ (Imperial Capital with Falling Autumn Leaves) on 24 November 2018 at Kasukabe Civic Culture Hall. The event attended eight of the cast members from the series: Juri Kimura (Tsugumi Kuze), Yuki Kaji (Hayato Ozaki), Nobuhiko Okamoto (Akira Kogami), Ryota Osaka (Hisui Hoshikawa), Ryohei Kimura (Shogo Ukai), Kenichi Suzumura (Shizuru Migiwa), Rio Natsuki (Shiori Tokimiya), and Eiji Miyashita (Kuina). Yuki Iwai from comedy duo Haraichi attended as the host.
The event began with the voices of Tsugumi, Shizuru, and Tokimiya making announcements from behind the curtain, and the event moved into its first segment. We got to look back on the series by watching scenes chosen by certain staff members of the anime. The Episode 6 scene where everyone eats rice crackers brought by police rookie Taro Tsubameno was chosen by staff members. Their reasoning behind this was that it was created in order to show the closeness of the characters. The cast members said there were many scenes in the anime of the characters eating, and that they enjoyed recording them. Rice crackers from the staff members were brought to the stage and the cast members enjoyed eating them while feeding each other. Some of them had difficulty speaking because their mouths were full, which made the fans at the venue laugh. More scenes chosen by the staff members were then shown, like the scene of Kuina’s first appearance from Episode 3, Tokimiya’s first appearance from Episode 1 and Takashi Shigimuna’s appearances from Episode 9 and 10. Lastly, the emotional scene from Episode 6 of Hisui crying at Nachtigal while listening to his mother’s feelings came on screen with comments from the production staff members: ‘This is our favorite scene as our animators tried so hard to draw Hisui for this scene.’ Hisui’s voice actor, Ryota Osaka, said ‘I appreciate their efforts at drawing him which was beyond my expectations’.
The following segment was a game called ‘Rare thing, Real thing or Fake thing?’ The cast members were divided into two teams at random. Juri Kimura, Yuki Kaji, Ryohei Kimura, and Rio Natsuki joined team Hayato whereas Nobuhiko Okamoto, Ryota Osaka, Kenichi Suzumura, and Eiji Miyashita joined team Akira. The first game is to spot the person who read out an actual sentence from a book. Team Hayato read out a book which tells how to talk to dogs by explaining dog’s barks. Each team member mimicked a dog’s barks and gave explanations for its meaning. On the other hand, team Akira read out an essay anthology of poets. Unlike the book about dogs’ language, it was a serious book, but they read aloud in anime characters’ voices from other anime works including famous characters in Kasukabe. The fans were truly entertained and cracked up at their clever improvisation.
For the second game, cards were handed out which could either contain a description or just be plain. The member who received a plain card had to pretend to have a description card. The other team try to find which one has a plain card. This game required improvisation skills and acting ability. The players intentionally stumbled over their words while reading the description on their cards or spoke fluently as if they were just reading words on their cards. Suzumura and Osaka from team Akira described a story about Thomas Edison whereas Ryohei Kimura and Kaji described a gray parrot, a large bird in the Psittacidae family. Team Hayato won the game and was awarded with book vouchers.
After the games, an audio drama was performed right there on stage. The script had been written especially for this event.
In the audio story, it had been five months since the accident at the Nachtigal and the autumn leaves had begun to change their colors. The members of Fukurou plus Kuina visit Kasukabe for a hike, but they have to run into a forest due to a sudden downpour. They find an empty house which is actually a summer house for the Viscount Ichinomiya, and take shelter from the rain. The diary written by a student who once lived here appears as a Maremono. His hidden love for the Viscount’s daughter influences Hayato, Akira, Hisui, Shogo, and Shizuru. His painful feelings come out from them…
It was an interactive performance and the LED light sticks of the fans at the venue were used to represent the autumn foliage. At the high point, the cast members performed monologues letting out the student’s thoughts concealed in the Maremono. The audience were totally enchanted by their superb performances.
At the end of the event, the cast members talked about their thoughts on the event, finally wrapping up with a message from Juri Kimura: ‘I portrayed Tsugumi Kuze in the anime series. In the game, you are Tsugumi because you are playing her role. I’m really happy to meet so many Tsugumi Kuzes today. Please keep supporting Nil Admirari no Tenbin’.
