Netflix is slowly trying to release more original content. It’s aim is for its library’s titles to be 50% original by the end of 2018. Anime is going to be be a major role in that effort, according to Verge. The streaming service is planning to add to its anime list more licenses it has already acquired like Summer 2017’s Kakegurui and Toei Animation’s Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya.
Netflix is no stranger to licensing Japanese titles. It has an ongoing partnership with Polygon Pictures through which it brought Knights of Sidonia and Ajin: Demi-Human to the west. It has also helped produce the anime movie Blame! Netflix is also behind the heavily criticized live action adaptation of Death Note and the original anime Neo Yokio.
