Makoto Shinkai is celebrating his 15th anniversary since his debut with the exhibition ‘Makoto Shinkai Exhibition – From Voices of a Distant Star (Hoshi no Koe) to Your Name (Kimi no Na wa)’. The exhibition will take place on 11 November – 18 December 2017 at the National Art Center in Tokyo. This will be the first time the museum will provide a space for an exhibition of an active anime movie producer.
In 2002, Makoto Shinkai made his debut with the movie Voices of a Distant Star. He started his career with a private production and landed a huge hit in 2016 with Your Name, which had a box office revenue of 25 billion yen. In this exhibition, a variety of storyboards, sketches, drawings, concept art and videos will be shown from his 15 years of work.
The exhibition hall will be split in 6 different areas. The first will be about Voices from a Distant Star. Area 2 will show things from the 2004-released The Place Promised in Our Early Days (Kumo no Muko, Yakusoku no Basho). Area 3 will include details of all three segments of 5 Centimeters per Second (Byousoku no 5 Centimeter) (2007). In area 4 one will find Children Who Chase Lost Voices (Hoshi o Ou Kodomo) from 2011, in area 5 the love story The Garden of Words (Kotonoha no Niwa) (2013), and of course in area 6 the unforgettable Your Name. The process of how the works started out can also be followed closely through the original project plans written by director Shinkai.
The entrance fee is 1,600 yen for regular tickets, 1,200 yen for university students, 800 yen for high school students. Middle school students and younger are free of charge. If you pre-reserve your ticket, you will be granted a 200-yen discount.
The ‘Makoto Shinkai Exhibition’ started on 3 June 2017 in the Kotobakan in Fukuoka, followed by the Koumimachi Kogen Museum in Nagano, and is now finally coming to Tokyo. In addition to the contents of the mobile exhibition, there will be extra material included which one can only see in Tokyo. Details will be released on a press conference on 7 September 2017. The homepage for the exhibition is also scheduled to be opening after the press conference.
