Τhe Haikyu! stage play titled Summer of Evolution (Shinka no Natsu) premiered at Tokyo Dome City Hall οn 8 September 2017. The show is being directed by Worry Kinoshita and combines projection mapping, acrobatics, and great costumes that bring the world of Haikyu to life. The main cast had some things to say after the successful premiere.
Comment from Kenta Suga as Shoyo Hinata
This stage play is the ‘Summer of Evolution’. Previously in the story, Karasuno High lost an official game and this stage play will be about how they overcome their weakness and get stronger in a training camp. I think Haikyu will be able to show you a new kind of theater. On the other hand, there are many things that haven’t changed. [laugh] But I think that is the charm of the Haikyu stage plays. We will sweat and show you our unwavering heat while we face this evolution.
Comment from Tatsuya Kageyama as Tobio Kageyama
Even though this is the first time I am involved in this stage play, I will do my best without question. The theme is summer, so it would be great if the audience would feel it as well. Since this is my first time doing such a long-running performance, I also want to take care of my body.
Comment from Ryotaroh Kosaka as Kei Tsukishima
Compared to the previous stories, this one includes more drama. I want to work properly and carefully on every single performance. This will be the first time my character’s brother, Akiteru Tsukishima, will be appearing, so I want to deepen and evolve the bond between us and Tadashi Yamaguchi.
Comment from Kairi Miura as Tadashi Yamaguchi
This will be the fifth time and the freckles have stabilized. [laughs] It will be a stage full of struggles as everybody wants to evolve. I will give all I have to perform on the stage and be careful to show the heat and also the coolness on stage.
Comment from Takato Nagata as Kenma Kozume
For this play I clearly felt that the members of the Karasuno High and Nekoma High are of course members of the volleyball club, but more importantly, they are individual high school students. I think that our performance has evolved as well, so take a good look! With every performance there will be even more evolution.
Comment from Shori Kondo as Tetsuro Kuroo
A new student named Lev Haiba starts at Nekoma High. Some time ago, the school managed to get in form but you can look forward to the changes that will occur with Lev joining the team.
Comment from Koki Yoshimoto as Kotaro Bokuto
I think the addition of the powerful Fukurodani Academy has the biggest influence on the evolution of Karasuno High. I think the degree of their evolution depends on how much I influence Hinata and Tsukki [Tsukishima], so I want to make a direct connection there with the play and play it earnestly. I feel best when one can see that I give 120%, so I will work hard.
Comment from Kosei Yuki as Keiji Akaashi
I will trust the abilities I showed during the practice and give my all with a passionate heart and a calm head. I want the audience to look forward to how Fukurodani Academy is influencing Karasuno High. I will not make any mistakes and even if there are some, I will turn them into strengths and will try to grow with each performance.
An Evolved Haikyu
Worry Kinoshita, who has directed all the stage plays so far said, ‘I always try to work with something new. Previous works were a three-hour match that looked like a circus with all the acrobatics and body expressions. This time, there is less sports and more everyday life. I think this time we were able to use different directing methods and made a big change in stage techniques, so I hope we will be able to show an evolved Haikyu.
Following Tokyo, there will be performances in Osaka, Hyogo, Miyagi, and Fukuoka, followed by another performance block in Tokyo. We will also hold live viewings, so even though there are limited seats for the performance, fans who didn’t get tickets can still see a live stream of the performance at the movie theater.
Suga said about their performances, ‘We have scheduled 37 performances in five cities. To get along with the cast will be our problem but I think we need to paralyze the brain that moves our body. [laugh] Even though fall has started, for us summer just started. I want to let the audience of all the venues have a good time and eat delicious food with the cast and staff members. It might be a late summer, but I feel like I am really at a summer training camp. So far it has mostly been about matches, but this time we will wait for you at the school!’
