Mobile Suit Gundam the Origin is a manga re-telling of the hit 1979 mecha anime series Mobile Suit Gundam. Published from 2002-2011, the manga is written by the anime series’ original character designer, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko.
The series has been adapted into a series of OVAs, which do not focus on the anime’s main character Amuro Ray, but instead on the origins of Char ‘The Red Comet’ Azanable (real name: Casaval Rem Deikum) and his sister Sayla Mass (real name: Artesia Som Deikum). Each OVA has run in Japanese cinemas for a limited time to much acclaim and will come to an end with the sixth and final OVA, Rise of the Red Comet (Tanjou, Akai Suisei). The OVA will screen in Japanese cinemas for four weeks from 5 May 2018.
An exciting trailer has been released, where we can see Char in his custom Zaku II, truly looking like a red comet crossing the sky. The theme song playing in the background is ‘Hasen no Namida’ (Dotted Line Tears) by popular musician Masayoshi Yamazaki.

Zeon, who are at a disadvantage in numbers, are driven to use their secret weapon, the so-called ‘Mobile Suit’, which turns the fight around and wins the battle. Char Aznable, a member of the Zeon Army, attained great results with his Mobile Suit ‘Zaku II’ and was promoted to Major, gaining the nickname ‘Red Comet’.
After the war at Loum, the Earth Federation is planning a counterattack called ‘V Sakusen’. Meanwhile, a boy called Amuro Ray on Side 7 is trying to discover the secrets of the new weapon ‘Gundam’ on his own. While the Zeon Army is on Antarctica on Earth, trying to have early negotiations for peace with the Earth Federation, there is a statement broadcasted all around the planet, coming from Luna II…
