It has been announced that the TV anime GeGeGe no Kitaro is going to release a 6th season. Miyuki Sawashiro (One Piece‘ Charlotte Pudding, Kakegurui‘s Kirari Momobami) will play the main character Kitaro, Masako Nozawa (Dragon Ball‘s Son Goku, GeGeGe no Kitaro Season 1 and 2’s Kitaro) will be playing his father Medama Oyaji, and Toshio Furukawa (Dragon Ball‘s Piccolo) will play Nezumi Otoko. This is quite an amazing cast! The new season will air on Fuji TV and other stations from 1 April 2018.
GeGeGe no Kitaro is an anime series based on the manga by Shigeru Mizuku. The first season aired in 1968. The anime is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018.
Sawashiro commented: ‘Each generation has its own image of Kitaro, but instead of feeling pressure, my heart is quietly beating.’
Masako Nozowa, who is to play Medama-Oyaji said: ‘I am happy to be able to have a parent-child relationship. I want to play the role without straining and stretching myself, just like the father I am.’
Nezumi-Otoko will be played by Toshio Furukawa: ‘This is the role I wanted to play years ago. I will do my best in order not to degrade the quality of this famous work with my poor abilities.’
Furthermore, Umeka Shoji is to play Neko-Musume, Kappei Yamaguchi is to play Ittan-Momen, Bin Shimada is to play the roles of Konaki-Jijii and Nurikabe, Mayumi Tanaka is to play Sunakake-Babaa, and Yukiyo Fuji is in charge of the original character called Nama Inuyama. This voice actor team is indeed a worthy cast for the 50th anniversary.
Fuji TV’s producer Yuta Kano left this comment: ‘The 6th season is the first season to be produced after (the original creator) Shigeru Mizuku passed away. This time we’ll work with the best cast, working on it with the same care as Shigeru Mizuku would have. I think that a new contemporary Kitaro will be born.’
It will be a work that every generation can enjoy, an entertaining horror that Japan can be proud of.
