Abi Umeda’s manga Children of the Whales (Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau) will be turned into an anime series! A new visual, a teaser video, and the main staff have now been announced.
The fantasy manga Children of the Whales was serialized in Akita Shoten’s monthly magazine Mystery Bonita and is set in a world covered in a sea of sand. On the big ship ‘Mud Whale’, drifting through the sand, live two kinds of people: The Shirushi (lit. ‘mark’) have a special ability called ‘saimia’, which is based on their feelings and allows them to live a short life. The others are Muin (lit. ‘no mark’); they enjoy a long life but have no special abilities. The story starts when Chakuro, who thought he would live a short life on the Mud Whale without ever getting to know the rest of the world, finds a girl named Rikosu in a ship wreck that drifted into the Mud Whale.
In the teaser visual we can see Chakuro and Rikosu. The over 3 minute-long teaser introduces us to their voices. J.C.STAFF will be the production studio. The director is Kyouhei Ishiguro, and the series composition is being taken on by Michiko Yokote.
Umeda released a comment about this anime production: ‘As the original creator of this work, I would be happy if you could experience life in the sea of sand with Chakuro and Rikosu together, from in front of your television, even if some of the content might be a bit shocking.’
The 9th volume of the manga was released today, 16 March 2017. If you buy the manga at Bunkyodo, Animate, Shosen, Horindo, Yurindo, or Kumazawa stores, you will get a bonus illustration. And if you want to look at a copy of the original manuscript of Volume 9, you should buy your copy at Shosen Boook Tower, Shosen Grande, or at the Takadanobaba store of Horindo, because they will be exhibiting some of the work’s original manuscripts. Those who purchase Volume 9 will be entered into a lottery to win the original manuscript. For more information, please look at the Shosen homepage.
