Let us introduce Shinjo Kun! He is the Yuru chara (mascot suit character) from Susaki in Kochi prefecture, which means he is the mascot of the city. Shinjo Kun is a Japanese river otter, an animal which was unfortunately declared extinct in 2012. The last official sighting of a river otter was in Kochi prefecture, which resulted in Shinjo Kun as the mascot of Susaki. Shinjo Kun is performing at events in and outside of Japan.
It has been announced today that this cute mascot character will get an anime adaptation in cooperation with Dandelion Animation Studio. The studio mostly produces family-friendly anime and has also worked on Pingu in the City, Welcome to the Ballroom, and Pop in Q, as well as the international co-production Robo Masters, and will help with the content licensing and branding of Shinjo Kun! The great news is that the goal is to promote the character not only within Japan but also overseas, mainly focusing on Asia and Europe, and many exciting things are planned aside from the anime. Currently ,they are in the progress of looking for companies who might want to work together with Susaki and Kochi prefecture. The goal of this cooperation is the regional branding of Kochi, increasing tourism in the region and spreading the word of the beautiful things this area of Japan has to offer.
Keep your eyes open and who knows, maybe you will see Shinjo Kun somewhere in your area as well!
