Like many before him, anime director Yutaka Yamamoto went to the fans for help with his upcoming original anime movie Twilight (Hakubo). His crowdfunding campaign has been a huge success so far, and even though he still isn’t past his initial goal, he managed to get more than 10 million yen!
He started this campaign on Japanese crowdfunding platform Campfire on 25 February 2017, setting his goal to 15 million yen. The collected money has recently exceeded the 10 million yen mark, and the number of supporters has surpassed 500. The deadline of the crowdfunding is to be 23:59 on 29 April.
The movie’s setting is Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, and Yamamoto has already visited this city to collect data on the city’s atmosphere.
‘This movie Twilight is to be the final film of the series which I have self-described as the Tohoku Trilogy (Tohoku Sanbu-saku), and it will be an anime film set in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture. I previously made the movies blossom which takes place in Ootsuchi-chou, Iwate Prefecture, and Wake Up, Girls! which takes place in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Finally, I am planning to illustrate a story in Fukushima.
However, like my previous works, I am not planning to make a film which features social issues nor has a strong message. I just want to illustrate the boys and girls who live happily in the ‘present’ Fukushima.
Actually, I first came up with the idea of this movie 20 years ago. I was still in college when I thought of the movie’s image.
In other words, it took 20 years for me to complete the concept of this movie. In that sense, this is a work for which I have really been biding my time. When I was having trouble coming up with the way I should illustrate a story taking place in Fukushima, I remembered the idea I came up with 20 years
When I was having trouble coming up with the way I should illustrate a story taking place in Fukushima, I remembered the idea I came up with 20 years ago and decided to combine it with the ideas I have now. An ordinary girl grows up in an ordinary town, spends an ordinary life, and falls in an ordinary love. This is something that is very precious and priceless for us who are living in the world after the earthquake disaster. That is the message I want to tell everyone through this movie.
Of course, I am also planning to launch a project for the movie’s contents tourism. I hope there will be many people who get interested in visiting Fukushima thanks to this project.
Why did I choose to crowdfund? This is something that I’ve talked about in fragments in many interviews, but to put it in simple words, I just wanted to create this movie freely on a platform that has no rules. In order to produce a movie that is liberal, honest, and filled with ideas, I believe that crowdfunding is the only way.
To make this movie something meaningful, I would sincerely appreciate it if you could give me your support.
